"I'm Afraid of Americans" was co-written by David Bowie and Brian Eno during the sessions of 1. Outside (1995) and originally released on the soundtrack of the film Showgirls. Bowie re-recorded a new version for the album Earthling (1997) with his band of the time, including Reeves Gabrels on guitar.
The track took on a life of its own with the remixes produced by Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), especially the famous V1, which gave an industrial and aggressive tone to the song. The music video, directed by Dom & Nic, shows Reznor playing an obsessive taxi driver (clearly inspired by Taxi Driver) chasing Bowie through the streets of New York.
Released as a single, reached #66 on the Billboard Hot 100, being Bowie's last single to enter the chart until the release of Blackstar in 2015. Although not a major commercial success, the song became one of the most striking and dark moments of Bowie's experimental phase in the 90s.
