"I don't think we're able to do it" is the most honest reaction to not including a romance system and honestly I can kind of respect it.

Especially as the last time they tried to excuse it they literally said "people would try to game it".

There are literally no cases of a romance making a game worse.

Romances are simply a way to enhance having faceless companions wandering around and give them an extra dimension characterwise. And typically, they're optional. You might as well blame them turning 3D.
