Worth uploading again my tweet from Oct 2017 and the new link for the blog that led to the Party-orchestrated removal of me from the management board of the University of Nottingham Ningbo China: “The 19th Party Congress and China’s Sorrow”.

It was a privilege to work with co-author @nyrola on this project. I've never known such a hard working researcher, thoughtful advocate, or kind friend. Scholars are fortunate to have her insight. The #Uyghur community is lucky to have her on their side.

@mkwitzke If you want the statistical yearbooks there are vendors and individuals who will supply these as electronic files. Ea yr I buy the annual stats yrbk equivalent to CDRom that used to come with the hardcopy volume. Best if someone in Cn can do so and then upload to a cloud service.
@mkwitzke The NSB site use to be good. The Statistical Yearbook was available in both HTML and Excel formats with a one year lag. Then they stopped Excel c2016. The latest volume added is the 2019, which means data for year-end 2018. The only census data are the 2010 one.
Despite spanning over 60 degrees of latitude, China has only 1 time zone, "Beijing Time" (UTC+8).
The unification of time in the PRC is a fascinating topic that has not been explored nearly enough in the literature. /THREAD
Inspired by the debate between @nfergus and @adam_tooze on the current state of globalisation, I devoted my lecture at Columbia this week to take the pulse on global value chains:

#Lineker outside the BBC's headquarters is a stature of the author of 1984, George Orwell, a former BBC talks producer. Inscribed on the wall behind the statue are these words: "If liberty means anything at all it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear."
@Yaqiu It never ceases to amaze me that so many people do not understand property rights ... and that in China the right to any property, fixed or mobile, is at the pleasure of the party-state.
Plans to transfer ministries of public/state security from State Council to a commission under direct control of the CPC. Similar to the CPC’s control over the Cyberspace Administration of China and the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection. A significant move (backward).
1: Here's a new paper in our seven region @CarnegieEndow#ChinaLocalGlobal initiative. Yuan Wang from @DukeKunshan and @Hangwei_Li ex @SOASpolitics explore how differing media norms in Kenya and Ethiopia yielded differing PR strategies by Chinese firms. https://t.co/VBCdRhchAE
As I’ve said before, Putin’s speeches are designed to do three things: provide rhetorical room for maneuver, galvanize domestic audiences, and disorient foreign audiences. They are not designed to be actually informative.

@LalehKhalili That is a damning indictment that could with minor change be applied to most UK HEIs. I retired last Oct. Totally feed up. University management in the UK is an oxymoron par excellence. And I’ve been a Dean and Assoc Provost and seen it at very close quarters. Change is hard.
It's 1962 and Alan Whicker is in the Rhondda to report on possibly Wales' greatest ever crisis - a chip shortage. Writer Gwyn Thomas explained the gravity of the situation: "the chip... is life itself".
