One of the biggest shocks for me in the U.S. education system was the weekly assignments. Nothing prepared me for that. Back home, the pace of school felt… spaced out. You had two tests during the semester and a final exam at the end. There was time to sit with the material, to read, to process. Even when you were serious about your work, there was still room to breathe between expectations. Then I got here. Almost immediately, I realized the structure was completely different. Every week, something was due. Discussion posts. Reflections. Assignments that required you to respond, think, form opinions, and articulate them. Consistently. At first, it wasn’t even about difficulty. It was the constancy. There was no mental space to fully settle from one task before the next demanded your attention. You were always in motion. Always thinking about what was due next. Always carrying something unfinished in your mind. The most disorienting part was this: I was already a disciplined student. I read regularly. I took my work seriously. This system required something different. It wasn’t just discipline. It was endurance. For the first two years, I felt like I could not breathe. Not in a dramatic way, more like a subtle but constant state of always being ‘on.’ Always needing to produce. Always adjusting. Aside the workload, I was also trying to understand expectations. What does a “good” response look like here? How do you engage critically every single week? What does it mean to contribute consistently, not just occasionally? I wasn’t just learning content. I was learning a new academic language. A new pace. A new way of existing as a student. That kind of learning is invisible. No one sees that part. Over time, I adjusted. I became more structured. More aware of my time. More intentional about how I engaged with my work. Looking back, I realize something: The challenge was never just the assignments. It was what they demanded of me a complete shift in how I related to learning itself. In this system, you are not allowed to disappear and return at the end. You have to be present. Consistently.

To whom it may concern as copied from Tomiloba Babarinde on LinkedIn. When an employee's contract is terminated mid-month, your instinct may be to pay only for the days worked (pro rata basis). However, the National Industrial Court has taken a different position. In Mr. Abe Adewunmi Babalola v. Equinox International Resources Ltd (Unreported Suit No. NICN/LA/166/2015), the Claimant, had his appointment terminated on 7th September 2012. He had worked only 7 days into that month. When he filed his claim, he asked for a pro-rated fraction of his September salary — essentially, payment for those 7 days only. In its decision, the Court answered this very question, i.e- Was the claimant entitled to a fraction of September salary or the full month? Relying on its earlier reasoning in Grant Mpanugo v. CAT Construction Nig Ltd & Anor (Unreported Suit No. NICN/LA/660/2015), the Court reaffirmed an important principle: Pro rata or fractional salary is not applicable to employees in periodic employment who are paid monthly. It applies only to daily paid workers. The reasoning is practical. A monthly salary is not a daily rate multiplied by the number of days in a particular month. If it were, employees would earn different amounts across the year because the months are uneven. February has 28 or 29 days. March has 31. If salary were to be calculated strictly by days, monthly pay would fluctuate across the year, which defeats the structure of periodic employment. The Court therefore held that where an employer terminates employment within a new month, the employer is liable to pay the full salary for that month, not a fraction based on days worked. Therefore, the claimant was entitled to his full September salary. In conclusion, the next time you terminate an employee’s employment mid month, resist the instinct to divide the monthly salary by 30 or 31.

One of the earliest habits a young lawyer should learn is the discipline of searching for answers before asking questions about basic issues. Today, the law sits openly online. Statutes, judgments, articles, and practice notes can be found within seconds through a simple search. Yet many young lawyers still rush into comment sections to ask questions that a quick search would easily answer. The legal profession rewards the lawyer who takes the time to look for the source, read carefully, and understand the issue before approaching others for clarification.
