My last week as a public servant after 31 years and what a fitting end with the launch of the West Yorkshire Vision Zero Strategy in Lister Park, Bradford. A collaborative document with our West Yorkshire colleagues laying out our zero tolerance to road death and serious injury.
I have stood down as Chair of the West Yorkshire Vision Zero Steering Group. My replacements for my day job and my strategic work were all with me today. I am very confident about the future of West Yorkshire safe roads and I know it's in good hands.
The disproportionate risk of death or serious injury in young driver crashes has been a consistent policy problem for decades (4,935 people in 2022). Here in @Road_Safety_GB I argue that the failure to implement a British #GDL is a major failure in British policy making. This is why ….

Nearly 3/4 of drivers told the @AAPresident they think a Graduated Driving Licence, limiting passengers, is a good idea. @RishiSunak and @Mark_J_Harper don’t agree. @Keir_Starmer @LouHaigh won’t comment. https://t.co/DiJcN9hBzc

The key factors in reducing emissions in town/villages are :-
Reduce number of car trips
Reduce weight of cars
Reduce repeated acceleration of cars
Reduce speed of cars
Setting a 20mph limit reduces energy for repeated acceleration by 55%.

Once again we see Whitehall imposing their pro car agenda on the DfT all at the expense of Road Safety. It is at odds with the majority of the UK and this coming in at the belief it will win the Middle England vote. I actually feel sorry for my Civil Servant colleagues.
We’re getting on with delivering our Plan for Drivers, helping people travel in the way that works best for them.

Government Advisors asking for the report to be permanently shelved. So, findings show that there is more support for LTNs than not. Could have probably done with this information a year ago so funding wasn't incorrectly removed from projects.

For those naysayers that don’t understand why we need segregated cycle lanes we managed to cycle 7 miles in and across Leeds with our 9 and 12 year olds. A journey we would never have done without @CityConnect1@ConnectingLeeds
English councils are setting 20mph limits for most urban/villages because the national 30 limit is no longer considered appropriate. Wales has acted logically by correcting the 30 national limit and changing it to 20mph with LAs able to determine where 30mph is appropriate.
All over the world 20mph and 30km/h limits are being set as the norm in villages, towns and cities. It's not fascist or communist, or even right or left, but is a simple and cost-effective way to make places better places, especially for the most vulnerable road users
Such an important front page with such an important message to get across - which comes after a number of road collisions in the Bradford district recently, some of which have sadly been fatal. Thank you to @ian_m_greenwood for speaking to me and raising awareness.
Every time we drive faster than the speed limit, or too fast for the road conditions, we increase the risk of a crash – and we increase the chance that someone we love will be killed or hurt on a road.
We need to talk about SPEED.

Research published in the BMJ states that pedestrians are 3.5-5.5 times more likely to die at speeds of 30-40 mph than at 20-30 mph.
Let’s talk about speed this #RoadSafetyWeek.

Well done and thank you to the volunteers who stewarded the new Schools Street outside Saltaire Primary. Great to see it launched and hope you eventually managed to dry out again! @spsprimary@Bradford_TandA@ShipleyTC#Saltaire#Shipley
