In Q1/2023 we identified a block of bid liquidity moving around the order book that, at times, was successful in attracting more bids to help fuel the #Bitcoin rally. It seemed evident that it was the same entity because there were no time gaps between buy walls that moved, they were always about the same size, and over time, the moves became somewhat predictable. Those that were following along at the time may remember that I named it Notorious B.I.D. which was reference to the rapper Biggie Smalls aka The Notorious B.I.G.
Whether you consider it fair market play, liquidity herding or price manipulation doesn't really matter. It happens to some degree all the time in #crypto, but I don't remember any other times I've been able to identify it, track it and trade it for such a long period of time. That game ended with a nasty rug pull the first week in March.
I've been analysing #FireCharts across different TFs, and I have detected some bid liquidity movement that looks similar to what we saw in Q1. To be clear, there is no way of knowing for sure if Notorious B.I.D. is back, but it does appear that somebody is using a Biggie sized stack to play a similar game. One of the key differences between what we saw in Q1 vs Now is that sometimes (not always) the buy walls are changing size. Not yet sure what to make of that, but watching closely to see if I can identify a predictable pattern to trade as I did in Q1.
As I analyze what we are seeing now, my early assumption is that because liquidity is thin in the order book and the buy wall previously set at $26.7k wasn't attracting enough bids, they moved the buy wall lower in an effort to attract more bid liquidity with a goal of pushing price up to a higher distribution range and ultimately using those bids as exit liquidity. I could be wrong, and TBH it doesn't really matter if this is the same entity that choreographed the rally in Q1, but this is how I'm looking at it until I see some data that convinces me that this isn't a distribution strategy. If the current buy wall or some news doesn't attract enough bids to push price up, a retest of the 200 Week Moving Average will be a good indication of what's to come. If it fails, expect more downside, but if it holds, it would be a strong foundation for another leg up. #NFA #RiskManagement for the W!
