This marks the most significant overhaul of these policies in decades to address fraud, security, and economic needs.

Public comments are invited until January 31, 2026, via email or post. Provincial consultations are planned to incorporate diverse input amid Government of National Unity priorities and alignment with UNHCR's regional migration strategies.

Border guards seize illicit goods worth millions at Beitbridge

Border guards at the Beitbridge Port of Entry have dealt a significant blow to cross-border smuggling after intercepting illicit goods worth more than R1 million during festive season operations.

Border Management Authority (BMA) Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato confirmed that on 15 December, officials seized non-perishable food items valued at over R350 000, along with 210 car batteries weighing more than two tonnes and worth over R412 600. A Hyundai H100 truck valued at R159 000 was also intercepted.

The seizures form part of the BMA’s intensified 2025/26 festive season operations, driven by the deployment of advanced, multi-faceted surveillance technology in high-risk areas. Dr Masiapato said the success highlights the impact of an intelligence-led, technology-driven approach to border security.

As part of the strategy, the BMA has partnered with local defence company DCD Protected Mobility, alongside Aselsan South Africa and Unipro Protective Wear, to pilot integrated surveillance, mobility and command-and-control systems at Beitbridge, one of South Africa’s busiest and most vulnerable land ports.

The partnership has seen the deployment of specialised patrol vehicles, including Springbuck personnel carriers and a Sherp all-terrain vehicle, enhancing patrol capacity, rapid response and operational reach. Since their introduction, officials have also intercepted illicit alcohol, counterfeit goods and undocumented migrants, while deterring illegal movements along the borderline.

Dr Masiapato said festive season operations aim not only to facilitate legitimate travel and trade, but also to dismantle criminal networks that threaten the economy and national security.

“South Africa’s borders are no longer soft targets,” he said, adding that innovation, partnerships and decisive enforcement would continue to safeguard the country’s sovereignty and the safety of its people.

Two Mozambicans Arrested After Stolen Fortuner Intercepted in Amersfoort

• Two Mozambicans were arrested after police in Amersfoort, Mpumalanga, intercepted a reportedly stolen Toyota Fortuner on the N11.

• The vehicle was reported stolen in Pinetown in November.

• Police spotted the SUV on Wednesday while local farmers were already in pursuit.

• On realising they were cornered, the suspects allegedly abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

• Police officers, with the help of farmers, chased and apprehended the two men aged 43 and 45.

• They were charged with possession of suspected stolen property and contravention of the Immigration Act.

• The suspects are expected to appear in the Amersfoort Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
