Part 3. For tens of millions of years, the largest dragonflies flew on wings about two and a half feet across, the spread of a small hawk, and a relative of the millipede grew longer than a grown adult is tall. What made the giants possible was the air itself, which back then carried far more oxygen than it does now.
An insect has no lungs, and it barely uses its blood to carry oxygen around. Instead its whole body is laced with a branching network of tiny air tubes that open through little holes in its shell and run air straight to each cell. The setup is quick and efficient while an animal stays small. But it works by plain diffusion, oxygen drifting on its own from where there is more of it to where there is less, and that drift weakens fast over distance. Grow too big and the air can no longer reach the cells buried deep inside.
Add more oxygen to the air and the ceiling rises. Richer air pushes the gas deeper into the body before it peters out, so a bug can carry more bulk and still keep its core fed. That was the world of the Carboniferous, the great coal-making age that ran from about 359 to 299 million years ago. Giant swamp forests pulled so much carbon out of the sky and buried it that oxygen climbed to roughly a third of the air, against a fifth today. In air that rich, bodies that would smother now could thrive.
Scientists have nearly rebuilt that world in the lab. Raise ordinary dragonflies in sealed tanks fed with extra oxygen and they come out around 15 percent bigger than usual. Oxygen probably had help. A warmer climate and swamps stuffed with food mattered too, and with no birds in the sky yet, nothing hunted the big fliers from above. But the gas was a large part of it, and the timing seals it: as the Carboniferous closed and oxygen drained back down, the true giants faded from the fossil record.
The amount of oxygen in the air put a hard cap on how big a breathing insect could grow. For one long stretch of deep time that cap lifted, and the bugs grew into giants. When the oxygen thinned back out, the giants disappeared, and no insect has come anywhere near that size since.

Don’t save this. Read it. Right now.
You paid ₹1,500 for a full body checkup.
Got a 12-page report.
Understood maybe 2 lines of it.
Meanwhile:
- Your B12 is 200. Below 500 = constant fatigue, brain fog, hair fall.
- Your Vitamin D is 15. Below 30 = weak bones, low immunity, weight gain. 70-80% of Indians are deficient.
- Your HbA1c is 5.7. Above 5.6 = pre-diabetes. 136 million Indians are already there.
You’re tired all the time.
You’re losing hair.
You can’t lose weight.
You blame stress.
It’s not stress. It’s your blood.
Here’s how to actually read your report:
Your fridge runs 24 hours a day. Solar panels only work while the sun’s out. That mismatch is the entire reason this plant exists, and the fix is just hot salt.
The Dunhuang plant in China’s Gobi Desert uses 12,000 mirrors aimed at a single tower about as tall as an 80-story building. All that focused sunlight heats a mix of salts (the same stuff in fertilizer) to 565°C, hot enough to glow red. That liquid salt gets pumped into giant insulated tanks. The tanks are so well insulated they only lose about 1°C per day. When the city needs electricity at 2am, the hot salt boils water into steam, the steam spins a turbine, and you get power. Same basic process as a coal plant. Just no coal.
Here’s what makes this different from regular solar: the storage lasts 11 hours. Sun goes down, plant keeps running all night. The big batteries that cities plug into their power grids right now? Those typically hold about 4 hours of electricity. Building batteries that last 11 hours is possible, but the cost balloons fast. A German energy storage study found that storing energy in hot salt costs roughly 33x less than storing it in the lithium-ion batteries we use today.
China has built 27 of these plants so far, enough to power roughly a million homes. They doubled that number in 2025 alone. Another 3,000 megawatts (enough for about 2 million more homes) are under construction right now, with 4,000 more in the planning stage. Beijing wants 15,000 megawatts by 2030.
The US tried this same technology once. Ivanpah, out in the Mojave Desert. Cost $2.2 billion. But they skipped the storage part entirely, so it could only make power while the sun was shining. It needed natural gas every morning just to start up. It’s now slated to shut down in 2026, thirteen years early, because regular solar panels got so cheap they made the whole project obsolete. China took the same idea, added the one part America left out, and is now building dozens of them.
One more thing worth knowing. The salt is made from basic industrial chemicals. No lithium mining. No cobalt. No rare earth metals. And it lasts 30 years of daily use before the tanks need work.
