@ISASaxonists I'm a medievalist who also does pet portraits. I have a Facebook page which is https://t.co/fPO6sn9wos I am told I do a good deal (read: I vastly undercharge) :) #academicmade
@AlisonKillilea Totally! They have a remarkable capacity for self-delusion and an utter lack of empathy as to the consequences of their actions. Students, junior staff, and colleagues are not playthings. It's exploitative.
@AlisonKillilea Also, yeah, the strange pervasiveness of the Suffering Byronic Intellectual who gets a free pass on being a creep because he is Tormented By His Muse. You see this figure a lot on Litfic too, unsurprisingly.
@AlisonKillilea Exactly! It's so entrenched that it gets brushed aside. (Poss. because that's easier) And everytime a case of harassment, bullying, and other abuse is ignored, it just enforces the sense that they can behave like that (sometimes openly) without consequence.
@AlisonKillilea Yep. His ilk even seem to think it a prerogative (!!). I've heard so many variations on 'Oh, but that's just how he is, the old chap, haha' from the old guard. As though this behavior is just a quirk, like quoting Milton or collecting china sheep.
Turned away from polling station this morning. Told I should vote in my EU member state. Called local council yesterday, they confirmed I could vote. Called again today. Apparently council had no time to send out forms to all EU residents. Nothing they can do now #DeniedMyVote
Guide to Grad School Chat:
- Which department are you in?
- What’s your thesis on?
- How much student debt do you have?
- On a scale of 1-10 how much do you feel like an imposter?
- What stage of complete psychological breakdown are you at?
- Do you need a cup of tea?
@ari_typing Never go outside with damp hair ever or you will die of pneumonia ON THE SPOT. It took me *years* to realise getting sick doesn't work the way my Russian gran told me it works.😑 Oh, and even numbers of flowers are only allowed for funerals.
@Hitchcockian@menysnoweballes@MikeBintley I can attest to this, having purchased at least fifteen authentic knucklebones of Thomas Becket *and* a real unicorn horn from Mike over the years.
Hey, #Classics tweeps: ancient ghost stories? Clytemnestra in the Eumenides, Patroclus in the Iliad & Hector in the Aeneid, Laius in the Thebaid, Julia in Lucan -- ok, lots of epic ghosts... ooh, Cynthia, of course, in Propertius... any actual 'haunting' type stories you know of?
