Currently reading this book about Jimmy Greaves. What an absolutely fascinating time he had in Italy. Not for how well it went, but for the fact that it only lasted for a few months.

He was the subject of a mega-money transfer to AC Milan from the team where he came through, Chelsea, where he scored a load of goals as a very young man.

Unfortunately for him, when he arrived in Milan, he found the whole atmosphere too stifling. He says that the football was so negative, so defensive. The media just wouldn't leave him alone. He couldn't even walk down the street without being chased by journalists. They were setting him up for things. He says they would knock on his door early in the morning and when he answered looking all bleary-eyed, they'd write stories suggesting he'd been out drinking, when in reality he was a married man with young kids.

On top of that, the coach at the time, Nereo Rocco – who, incidentally, is the man the Triestina stadium is named after, and I've actually been there and made a video there – was apparently too full-on and too hands-on, constantly trying to restrict Greaves' movements and control what he did away from football.

These were some of the main reasons why Greaves only stayed a few months in Italy. He scored goals, but never settled, and before long he was back in England and joining the club that had been his boyhood team before Chelsea: Tottenham Hotspur.
