It's challenging but essential for parents and teachers to celebrate kids who have the gumption to question what they're told, and, indeed, to actively support them in becoming reflective rebels. Alas, too many adults seem to prefer the child of least resistance.
Things that don't exist: children who don't want to learn, a culture or mindset of poverty, communities that don't value education, educational outcome disparities caused by an entire group's shortage of "grit." Let's not use resources fixing things that don't exist.
Subtweeting: don’t ever fall back on “there isn’t enough time in the course to properly #teach the material”. Why are we designing courses that we can’t finish? Who are we serving? #ITeachMath
The way we talk about kids and grading reflects deep beliefs that can be harmful. I made a recent change to replace “grading” with “feedback.” Kids need feedback to learn, not a grade. Tonight I’m giving feedback, not grading.
Watching so many teachers go through the struggle of “but if I can’t grade it how will I make them do it/learn it?” Folks it can be done. Students want to learn. If the grade is the only thing making them do the work reconsider if the work is worthwhile.
Even if we use the least-bad methods, ed. psychs M. Maehr & C. Midgley reminded us, "an overemphasis on assessment can actually undermine the pursuit of excellence." The more kids are led to focus on how well they're doing, the less they're thinking about the learning itself.
@carlosbaggage28 I find that often those who are the quietest, that sit & listen, take in all perspectives, & then speak are much more thorough with what they bring to the table.
As leaders we need to give them that opportunity to share when they can’t find an “in” or opportunity to do so.
@guillotines_rus @Ms_Ermis @spatricejones @heymrsbond I recommend that you read Bettina Love’s book “We Want to do More than Survive” She describes abolition brilliantly in that book
@nearpod#NearpodCheer I plan to get instantaneous feedback from my Stats students during live lessons using the poll and quiz features of Nearpod. Nearpod is a game-changer!!
