Ngizwe Mchunu insulted a mother and a woman of an EFF leader in a crowd where women made up almost half the audience, and the women cheered for him. Insulting women is a violent act, and we must not promote it. The men who are killing women started by insulting them.

To witness Prof. Lwazi Lushaba at the 16th Steve Biko Institutional Public Lecture was not to attend an academic presentation; it was to bear witness to an intellectual insurrection. It was a moment of unapologetic, decolonial clarity that shook the very foundations of the ivory tower.

Prof. Lushaba is not merely a "rebel academic." He is the embodiment of a revolutionary praxis that many in the complicit halls of South African tertiary institutions have long abandoned. He does not critique academia from within, hoping for a seat at its table. He sets the table ablaze, exposing its fundamental rot: its role as a factory for market-ready functionaries rather than a sanctuary for the liberation of the mind. His critique is a devastating indictment of an education system that has perfected the art of producing skilled labor for capital while starving the African soul of its own intellectual sustenance.

His appearance alone was a profound ideological statement. He arrived not in the costume of colonial respectability the suit and tie that signify conformity to a Westernized standard, but as a blue-collar worker. The bushy, unkempt hair and beard were not a matter of style; they were a declaration of war against the politics of respectability that has for too long policed the African intellectual. He stood as a living testament to the idea that knowledge is not the preserve of the well-groomed elite, but the rightful inheritance of the toiling masses. In him, the worker and the intellectual were one.

The audacity of his central thesis was breathtaking. To assert that there is only one philosophy in Azania, Black Consciousness is to perform a radical act of decolonial cartography. He did not argue for its inclusion in a pre-existing, Eurocentric canon. He declared it the canon. And then, with the defiant certainty of a prophet, he made the point that one will not find a philosopher in Azania other than Biko.

This was not an erasure of other thinkers, but a profound statement on the nature of true philosophy. For Lushaba, philosophy is not an abstract, esoteric game for the seminar room. It is a weapon of struggle. It is the systematic articulation of a people's quest for liberation. And in this land, it was Steve Biko who, par excellence, forged the philosophical blade of Black Consciousness. Why, Lushaba scornfully wonders, does academia waste its time trying to justify Biko as a philosopher? To ask for his credentials is to have already conceded to the very colonial logic that Biko sought to destroy. Biko's philosophy is not a thesis to be defended; it is the air we breathe, the struggle we wage.

In a world that demands our intellectuals be docile, market-friendly, and dressed for the part, Prof. Lushaba stands as a beacon of ungovernable thought. He disappointed those who expected a mannequin. What they got was a man. A rebel academic who did not just teach a lesson, but embodied it. He reminded us that the highest calling of the African intellectual is not to interpret the world, but to change it. And that change begins with the audacious, uncompromising, and beautiful act of reclaiming our own philosophy, on our own terms.
