This is exactly why the conversation about Nigeria's federal structure cannot continue to be treated as taboo.

The Southwest has spent more than a century within this arrangement, since the 1914 amalgamation, and the fundamental question remains: does the present structure allow the regions that generate substantial economic value to retain enough of that value to develop at the pace they are capable of?

We have spent decades arguing about who gets what from the center, rather than asking whether the center should control so much in the first place.

I am not arguing that the Southwest should stop contributing to Nigeria. I am arguing that Nigeria should stop making regional development unnecessarily dependent on Abuja.

Give the regions greater fiscal and administrative autonomy. Let them control more of their resources, take greater responsibility for their development, and compete, innovate, and build according to their circumstances. Let the federal government concentrate on the things that genuinely require a federation: defense, foreign affairs, monetary policy, national standards, and other clearly federal responsibilities.

If the Southwest can generate, innovate, and build, why should its development continually be constrained by a structure designed around central distribution rather than regional productivity?

We can remain one Nigeria without insisting on one-size-fits-all governance.

Regional autonomy is not a declaration of war against Nigeria. It may simply be an argument for allowing Nigeria's constituent regions to breathe.

And after more than a century of this arrangement, surely we should be mature enough to have that conversation without treating it as a threat to the existence of the country.

Approval for Modernisation and Upgrade of Onne, Rivers, Delta, Calabar Ports

I am pleased to announce that the Federal Government has approved the comprehensive modernisation and upgrade of Onne, Rivers, Delta and Calabar Ports.

This approval builds on the earlier approval for the modernisation and upgrade of Apapa and Tin Can Island Ports in Lagos, reaffirming our determination to develop a balanced, efficient and globally competitive national port system.

Under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu @officialABAT, infrastructure renewal and economic diversification remain central to the Renewed Hope Agenda. Modern and efficient ports are critical to this vision because they facilitate trade, support industry, attract investment and create jobs.

Extending the modernisation programme beyond Lagos will complement ongoing investments in Apapa and Tin Can Island, while helping to reduce the concentration of cargo traffic around Lagos and creating additional efficient gateways for international trade.

Upgraded infrastructure and improved operational efficiency at Onne, Rivers, Delta and Calabar Ports will enhance cargo handling, reduce vessel turnaround times, strengthen regional connectivity and make the movement of goods more predictable and cost-effective.

These ports have strategic roles to play in our trade, industrial and regional development, and we are determined to equip them to meet the demands of a growing economy.

This is part of a broader expansion of Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure, including Federal Government approvals for the development of the Ibom, Bakassi, Agge, Gateway, Ondo and Bonny Deep Seaports.

Our approach is comprehensive. We are modernising existing ports while facilitating the development of new deep seaports. Together, these investments will expand Nigeria’s maritime capacity, create stronger economic corridors and position our country as a major maritime and logistics hub in Africa.

Our vision is an integrated maritime and logistics system in which ports, roads, rail, inland waterways and other transport infrastructure work together to enable the seamless movement of cargo.

We want Nigerian businesses to spend less time and resources moving their goods, while creating an environment that encourages investment and supports job creation.

The Ministry will continue to work closely with state governments, terminal operators, investors, shipping companies and other stakeholders to ensure that these projects translate into tangible improvements across Nigeria’s marine and blue economy.

Nigeria has the geography, market and maritime resources to become a leading maritime hub. Our responsibility is to provide the infrastructure, policies and enabling environment required to turn that potential into sustainable economic value.

Nigeria’s challenge is much bigger than simply achieving GDP growth or becoming Africa’s largest economy again. Those headlines may be useful, but they are not the real prize. Nigeria wins when the productivity and real incomes of Nigerians rise consistently over time. A country of more than 200 million people cannot rely indefinitely on a small number of highly productive sectors while a large proportion of the population remains trapped in low-productivity work.

The decisions we have taken to reposition Nigeria’s oil and gas sector are beginning to bear fruit.

Since assuming office, I have signed a series of Presidential Directives and Executive Orders to make investment in Nigeria more competitive, reduce the cost and time required to develop projects, provide greater certainty to investors and ensure that our natural resources deliver greater value to our people.

One of those reforms introduced specific incentives to unlock onshore and shallow-water gas projects that had remained undeveloped for years.

Today, we are seeing the result.

AMNI International and TotalEnergies have taken an $800 million Final Investment Decision to develop the Ima Gas Field, discovered in 1973 and left underground for more than fifty years.

For Nigerians, this means work for our engineers, technicians and contractors. It means opportunities for Nigerian businesses, jobs and economic activity in our host communities, and more export earnings for our country.

AMNI, a Nigerian company, holds the majority interest in the project. Around 60% of the development workforce is expected to come from the host communities.

Ima is expected to produce about 350 million cubic feet of gas every day at peak and supply about one-third of the gas required for the expansion of Nigeria LNG.

This is what our reforms are intended to achieve, to move Nigeria’s resources from potential to production and translate them into jobs, incomes and opportunity for our people.

We have more to unlock.

People forget their names.

Their social media posts mysteriously disappear.

Then every affected business owner receives a yellow card saying:

Each episode follows a different business:

Brands can sponsor individual episodes.

You can also pitch the series to agencies, e-commerce businesses, restaurants, real-estate companies and FMCG brands.

You are not interrupting entertainment with an advert.

The entertainment itself is the advert.
