On June 4, 1989, the Chinese military moved into Beijing's Tiananmen Square to violently squelch a student protest. It has been estimated that those butchered by the Red Army range from the low-hundreds into the thousands, with many more injured, and up to 10,000 arrested. To this day, the Chinese government forbids any mention of the incident inside China.

On May 27, 1961, John Tower was elected to the U.S. Senate from Texas in a special election called after Lyndon Johnson became the vice president. Tower was the first Republican elected statewide since Reconstruction. He held the seat for more than 20 years, choosing not to seek re-election in 1984.

On May 26, 1924, President Calvin Coolidge signed the Immigration Act of 1924 into law. Among other things, it established the Border Patrol and limited immigration to two percent of any given nationโs residents already living in the United States as of the 1890 census.
