Editorial: What matters is that talented people find satisfying careers in science. Principal investigators should show flexibility, patience and support for everyone in their group and push harder than ever for mental-health services. https://t.co/Y05M7Go16D
So I was wondering why the wait until Monday for the new social gathering rules in England, then found out about this horse racing festival running from today until Saturday. What a lucky coincidence on the timings.
Thousands of people are set to head to #Doncaster over the next few days as the annual St Leger festival gets underway today, despite concerns over rising coronavirus cases.
It's being used as a pilot event by the government to see if crowds can return safely to venues.
The schools minister, Nick Gibb, said on the Today Programme that 330,000 people are being tested for Covid-19 each day.
The true number, for England, is more like 52,000.

Look, most people are going to wear masks, just like most people were kind and careful throughout lockdown. So stop engaging with the 'no facemasks' gang. They don't mean it, they're showing off to their mates. Give your attention to quiet, empathetic, secure people.
But the govt is sitting on a much more complete dataset including pillar 2, which tells a completely different story
More than 90% of new cases in Leicester are now under pillar 2, yet these numbers are not public. If you’re a local biz owner in Leicester, you only see the blue.
Bonus bastard points for the amendment honouring the Gov's "tireless efforts" in tackling the crisis and saving lives. They're the real heroes in this crisis! (/sarcasm)
From the people who brought you: "well, we don't *need* to feed these starving children, do we?". Now it's NHS and care staff in the firing line. Depressed but not surprised by this point.
MPs have voted against @UKLabour opposition day motion on routine weekly Covid-19 testing for NHS and care workers by 344 votes to 198.
MPs have voted to approve the Amendment (a) without a division.
Sir David King "The most important thing when you are running any crisis of this kind is truth and honesty" - as evidence emerges that more than 1000 people died every day in the UK for 22 consecutive days - while the official figures never exceeded 1000.

@_laynaw I think level 4 (transmission high or rising exponentially) means we're allowed to drive cross-country if we're actively ill. Between 3 and 4 (or as it's also known, still level 4), means it's completely safe to end lockdown. 3 means... something about an app? 🤔
The weirdest part of the UK discourse right now is people declaring removing statues = erasing history.
Sorry, since when have STATUES been a major mechanism for recording the complexity and nuance of history? Whose understanding of history depends on 8-foot-tall bronze models?
EXCLUSIVE: ITV News has obtained evidence that it was *always* the plan to discharge Covid-19 patients into care homes.
1,800 beds were block booked in care homes by the NHS and councils for that exact purpose.
...And they’re still being discharged.

If you’ve tested positive and the track and trace people ask who you’ve been in contact with, just say Dominic Cummings. If everyone who tests positive says that, he won’t be able to leave the house until this is over.
