Ansarallah kills 14 Saudi-backed government troops in western Yemen

At least 14 troops aligned with Yemen's Saudi-backed, internationally recognized government were killed and 23 wounded after Ansarallah launched an assault on military positions in the Hays district, south of Hodeidah, according to two pro-government military officials cited by AFP on 5 July.

The fighting reportedly began late Friday, with Ansarallah briefly overrunning government positions before government forces said they retook them following a counterattack at dawn on Saturday.

The two military officials, speaking to AFP, said the attack involved sniper fire followed by drone and mortar strikes, describing it as the deadliest assault on government forces in years.

They also claimed government troops inflicted casualties on Ansarallah fighters during the clashes, though no figures were provided.

The confrontation marks a significant escalation along a front that has remained largely frozen since the 2022 UN-brokered truce.

It came days after the Yemeni Armed Forces announced they had thwarted a Saudi attempt to prevent an Iranian aircraft from landing in Yemen, warning that Saudi airports and other strategic infrastructure could become targets if such actions were repeated.
