Vikings UDFA rookie Jacob Thomas continues to take snaps with the first-team defense even in these Ravens joint practices. And he doesn’t look a tick slow.
Shout out to Evan Cohen for calling out KOC on national television. This doesn’t happen often if at all. KO is the Golden Child according to the NFL community. QB whisper my ass ‼️

@JMUGameday Timeout. ODU was filling their old stadium in the FCS. Couldn’t get season tickets for a long time when they brought football back. They were also consistently good. They just didn’t sustain it when they moved up. Made sense, just hasn’t panned out.
The Vikings are two weeks into training camp + a month of spring practice.
Kyler Murray is still struggling to create separation from JJ McCarthy -- to put it mildly.
At what point does this start to actually matter in the "QB competition?"
I DO think there's a world where Kevin O'Connell + Frank Smith bring out the best version of Kyler Murray.
But I also think the backdrop of where Kyler's career is at right now is important context to note.
The Cardinals are paying Kyler 30m+ to go away.
50 NFL executives + coaches (per @SandoNFL) ranked Kyler as a Tier 3 QB (23rd in the NFL), with 9 of those executives ranking him Tier 4.
Among 40 qualified QBs (750+ throws) the last 4 years, Kyler ranks
▪️ 28th in passer rating
▪️ 33rd in Yards Per Attempt
▪️ 38th in average air yards
▪️ 22nd in EPA/play
Kyler came into Minnesota, by all of the above accounts, as a reclamation project.
And two weeks into Vikings camp + a month of spring practices, JJ McCarthy is outplaying Kyler in a significant number of practices.
Right now, it feels like the Vikings are set to plow through all of this information and just... cross their fingers on Kyler flipping a switch in the regular season.
Interesting situation brewing.
Yankees will reportedly call up INF George Lombard Jr., New York's No. 1 and @MLBPipeline's No. 20 overall prospect, per multiple reports including MLB's @BryanHoch.
How can Hal and Cashman watch stuff like this happen and not feel a burning fire to go out and try to hit a home run on the trade market too? Someone get these guys on testosterone replacement therapy so they’ll behave like men with a spine. Show some competitive fire. Go for it!
JJ McCarthy
There’s a weird disconnect between reality and theory on JJ McCarthy. People FEEL like he is inept, but the Vikings were 6-4 in games that McCarthy started. People FEEL like he has had plenty of experience, but he is only 23 years old. He is 1.3 years older than Arch Manning and almost a year younger than Cam Ward. McCarthy also missed his entire rookie year due to a knee injury—hard to develop when you can’t walk.
People also FEEL like McCarthy was in a great situation last year with the Vikings, because they know that the Vikings are good on paper. But paper doesn’t play football. McCarthy was missing 3 of his 5 starting offensive linemen in his first two starts, and the backups were astonishingly bad. Justin Skule should face a military tribunal for his crimes against pass-protection against the Bears and Falcons. Justin Jefferson is awesome, and Jordan Addison is an amazing WR2, but both had uncharacteristically drop-prone seasons in 2025. So if you can’t get any protection, your receivers keep dropping everything, you’re just beginning to adjust to the NFL, and you keep getting hurt (because those backup linemen are only theoretically corporeal), how are you supposed to put up numbers? Isn’t it sufficient that McCarthy has a WINNING RECORD?
Apparently not.
McCarthy may not even start this year, as he is currently embroiled in a QB battle with Kyler Murray that most fans think is a foregone conclusion. Through OTAs and the first week of camp, McCarthy has very soundly bested Murray. Even reporters that have been dubious of McCarthy in the past admit that JJ has bested Kyler in every single practice.
If JJ starts, I expect big things—perhaps even an NFC North crown. I don't think McCarthy is a star, but I think that he is a solid starting QB, much like Sam Darnold and Kirk Cousins were. That is, if JJ can actually stay healthy. I don't know--I'm not that kind of doctor.
If Kyler starts, I still expect a good year out of the Vikings, but less so. We can only wait and see.
