Astigmatism gang rise up! Here are some tips we tell folks regarding our dumb eyeballs.

If your red dot looks like a starburst, comet, or smudge instead of a clean circle, you probably have astigmatism — an irregularly shaped cornea that scatters light along multiple axes. It’s extremely common, and most shooters don’t know they have it until they look through a red dot.

How to tell:
Rotate the optic 90 degrees. If the distorted shape rotates with it, the sight is defective. If the shape stays the same while the optic turns, it’s your eyes. You can also snap a phone photo through the sight — the camera shows the dot’s true shape.

10 Tips to Shoot Better:

1. Turn the brightness down. The single biggest fix. Max brightness causes bleeding, halos, and starbursts. Dim the dot until it sharpens.

2. Go bigger, not smaller. A 4 or 6 MOA dot often appears cleaner than a 2 MOA. Smaller dots concentrate distortion.

3. Try green. Green sits at the peak of human visual acuity and often appears crisper than red.

4. Focus on the target, not the dot. Look through the dot. Your brain will place the fuzzy shape correctly.

5. Get prescription shooting glasses. Corrective lenses fix the problem at the source. See an eye doctor.

6. Use a circle-dot reticle. The outer ring gives your eye a reference point even when the center is fuzzy.

7. Consider a prism sight. Etched reticles don’t rely on projected light — they stay sharp regardless of your vision. Many have diopter adjustments too.

8. Try a holographic sight. EOTech-style holograms distort less than reflex LEDs for many astigmatic shooters.

9. Look at an LPVO. Even at 1x, the etched reticle bypasses the distortion entirely.

10. Test before you buy. Every astigmatism is different. Look through multiple optics at a shop before spending money.
