After winning over audiences and critics at Cinemalaya 2025, fantasy dramedy “Child No. 82 (Son of Boy Kana)” is finally making its way to mainstream cinemas.

The award-winning independent film directed by first-time feature filmmaker Tim Rone Villanueva is set for a nationwide theatrical release beginning July 1, giving more moviegoers a chance to experience one of last year’s most talked-about local films.

The movie made history during the 21st Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival as the festival’s first-ever fantasy film entry in its full-length competition. It quickly emerged as a crowd favorite, eventually taking home the Audience Choice Award, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress for Rochelle Pangilinan.

“Child No. 82” follows Max, a 17-year-old student played by JM Ibarra, who discovers he is one of the many illegitimate children of the late action-fantasy superstar Maximo “Boy Kana” Maniego Sr., portrayed by Vhong Navarro.

With only hours left before public viewing ends at his father’s wake, Max races against time to prove that he is Boy Kana’s 82nd child. Success would not only grant him legal recognition and a share of the inheritance but also help secure a future for his pregnant teenage girlfriend.

The film blends fantasy, comedy, and family drama while tackling themes of identity, legitimacy, fame, and the complexities of Filipino family relationships.

Aside from Ibarra, Navarro, and Pangilinan, the ensemble cast includes Kai Montinola, Inah Evans, and veteran actress Irma Adlawan.

The project marked a major milestone for lead actor Ibarra, who landed his first title role, while also serving as Villanueva’s feature-length directorial debut.

Produced by Outplay Media Production with support from the Cinemalaya Foundation and the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the film earned praise during its festival run for its imaginative storytelling, emotional depth, and uniquely Filipino take on fantasy cinema.

With its nationwide release, “Child No. 82” is poised to introduce a wider audience to the film that proved independent cinema can deliver both heart and spectacle—and perhaps launch a new chapter for Filipino fantasy films on the big screen.
