【On This Day in History · October 7】
Seventy-six years ago today, war rewrote Tibet's fate. On October 7, 1950, the People's Liberation Army crossed the Jinsha River and attacked Chamdo, in a Tibet that was independent in all but name. The Tibetan army numbered about 8,500 men, facing a PLA force several times its size; by October 19, Chamdo had fallen and some 5,000 Tibetan troops had surrendered. The terms had been set in advance: Beijing demanded that Tibet accept Chinese sovereignty, with its defense and foreign affairs in Beijing's hands — accept, and it would be called "peaceful liberation"; refuse, and face war.
【What happened next】
In 1951, Tibetan delegates signed the Seventeen Point Agreement in Beijing, in which Beijing promised Tibetan autonomy and no change to the existing system. Just eight years later, in 1959, Lhasa rose up and the Dalai Lama fled to India; he has never been allowed home. Seventy-six years on, in July 2025, the 90-year-old Dalai Lama announced that his reincarnation would continue outside China. Beijing's reply: any reincarnation must be approved by the central government. And at the UN Human Rights Council in recent weeks, state after state has raised concerns over the pressure on Tibetans' cultural, linguistic and religious rights.
【Comment】
From "peaceful liberation" at gunpoint to a Party veto over reincarnation — of all Beijing's promises to Tibet, the only one ever kept is control. Under Xi Jinping, who abolished term limits to rule for life, assimilation is only accelerating: a regime that will not leave even the next life alone has no business preaching "ethnic unity."

Fifty years ago today, the Cultural Revolution ended with an arrest inside Zhongnanhai — not with a vote by the people or a public reckoning. On October 6, 1976, less than a month after Mao Zedong's death, Hua Guofeng, together with Ye Jianying and Wang Dongxing, arrested Jiang Qing, Zhang Chunqiao, Yao Wenyuan and Wang Hongwen — the "Gang of Four" — in Beijing, ending the Cultural Revolution Mao had launched in 1966. Jiang Qing was Mao's wife; when the news spread, celebrations broke out in many places, as people believed a decade of catastrophe was finally over. The 1980–81 trial stated that the Gang had persecuted 729,511 people, 34,800 of whom died; the CCP's 1981 resolution also admitted the Cultural Revolution had caused the most severe setback and the heaviest losses since the founding of the PRC.
Blame was concentrated on four people, while Mao, who launched it, and the one-party dictatorship itself were never fully reckoned with, and the transfer of supreme power was still decided in secret party meetings. Deng Xiaoping later helped write a two-term limit for the state presidency into the 1982 constitution, precisely to prevent one-man rule and a personality cult from returning.
Fifty years on, Xi Jinping amended the constitution in 2018 to abolish that presidential term limit, tearing down that safeguard himself. When a country's succession can only happen through arrest, conspiracy or a leader's death, ordinary people have no right to change rulers peacefully. Ending a disaster is not the same as building a system that stops it from happening again; as long as one-party dictatorship remains, the next "core" can still stand above the constitution.

A son of Taiwan's president was followed, photographed and had his license plates recorded on American soil — and the woman accused of doing it for Beijing is a 34-year-old from California. The FBI arrested her at Los Angeles International Airport on October 4.
The U.S. Justice Department charges that Wanying Zhang, also known as Heather, acted as an unregistered agent of the Chinese government. According to the complaint, she traveled to Seattle in 2025 at the direction of Chinese officials and surveilled a son of Taiwan President Lai Ching-te and his family, sending photos, video and license plate information back to her handlers using tradecraft. The FBI did not name the target directly; the New York Post identified him as Lai Ting-yu, who resides in the United States.
Taiwan's presidential office, through spokesperson Karen Kuo, called it "a typical case of transnational repression." China's foreign ministry said it was not familiar with the case and opposed sensationalizing so-called "Chinese spies." Zhang was due to appear in federal court in Los Angeles on Monday, October 5. The charges are allegations, and she is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
Not even a president's family is beyond Beijing's reach on U.S. soil. That is what transnational repression looks like: surveillance, tracking and pressure aimed not only at dissidents, but at their loved ones. Just days after Xi Jinping vowed on September 30 to "resolutely crack down" on Taiwan independence, an alleged plot to shadow Lai Ching-te's family in America has come to light. When a regime reaches onto foreign soil, what it exports is fear. Xi, who abolished term limits to rule for life, governs by fear at home — and exports it abroad.

On October 4, 2019, Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam bypassed the legislature and invoked the colonial-era Emergency Regulations Ordinance — unused since 1967 — to ban face coverings at public assemblies, effective at midnight. Anyone who covered their face, even with face paint, faced up to one year in prison and a HK$25,000 fine. The anti-extradition protests had then been running for nearly four months, with clashes escalating. Security Secretary John Lee said openly that the ban would make protesters easier to identify and prosecute. Lam insisted, in the same breath, that Hong Kong was "not in a state of emergency."
The ban did not calm the streets; it opened the door to ruling by emergency decree. In 2020, Beijing imposed the National Security Law on Hong Kong, followed by Article 23 legislation in 2024. Apple Daily was forced to close, and its founder Jimmy Lai was sentenced to 20 years in prison this February. John Lee, the official who championed the mask ban, was rewarded with the chief executive's office in 2022. In the city that was "not in an emergency," peaceful assembly has all but vanished.
From a mask ban to a national security law, the path could not be clearer: take one freedom in the name of emergency, then make the exception the rule. Hong Kong under Xi Jinping proves that "one country, two systems" was always a promise Beijing could revoke at will. A ban can cover a face; it cannot extinguish a city's conscience — and seven years on, Hong Kongers have lost far more than the right to wear a mask.

[News] Starbucks has opened its first stores in Xinjiang — on land where more than a million Uyghurs have been detained. Reuters reported on Oct 2 that Starbucks opened its first two Urumqi outlets, one at the Grand Bazaar and one at the international airport. John Moolenaar, chair of the House Select Committee on the CCP, immediately demanded Starbucks close them, calling the move "shocking and morally bankrupt." Reuters also noticed a telling detail: photos of the stores show English and Chinese signage — with no Uyghur in sight.
In his letter, Moolenaar pointed out that the CCP has detained more than a million Uyghurs, and that forced labor and mass detention continue. The UN Human Rights Office concluded back in 2022 that Xinjiang had seen serious human rights violations that may amount to crimes against humanity. Opening stores there with fanfare lends a global brand's name to the "normalization" of that land.
Comment: For multinationals, Xinjiang was never just another market. To do business there, you accept the rules: don't mention human rights, keep Uyghur off the signs, coexist with the camps. That is exactly the effect Xi Jinping wants — the world condemns on one side and queues up to profit on the other, until repression becomes everyday life. The smell of coffee in the Grand Bazaar will not free a single one of the million-plus detainees. But it hands the CCP one more line of propaganda: "See? Everything is normal." And that image is what a dictatorship wants most.

[News] For the first time in Hong Kong, a journalist has been taken away by national security police for "sedition." On Sept 30, Tang Ho-wing, founder of the independent outlet Boom News, was arrested by the National Security Department. He was not released on bail until the early hours of Oct 2 — after nearly 48 hours in custody.
Tang is 37, and Boom News has more than 66,000 followers on Instagram. Police accuse him of sedition and spreading false information, over reporting linked to the "831" Prince Edward station incident; eight people were arrested in connection with the commemoration. It is the first publicly known sedition arrest of a journalist under the Article 23 national security law. The International Federation of Journalists and the Hong Kong Journalists Association have demanded the authorities explain the grounds, insisting that journalists must not be criminalised for doing their job.
Comment: In today's Hong Kong, practicing journalism is itself a high-risk occupation. First the National Security Law, then Article 23, each drafted broader than the last. First they jailed the media owner; now they arrest independent reporters. Under Xi Jinping, "one country, two systems" has kept the "one country" and discarded the "two systems." When reporting can be branded sedition, silence is the only answer this regime wants — and people like Tang Ho-wing refuse to give it.

On the eve of National Day, Chengdu was still making arrests.
Chen Yunfei, an Early Rain Covenant Church member and a participant in the 1989 democracy movement, was formally arrested on Sept. 23 by police in Chengdu’s Wenjiang District on suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.” ChinaAid reported this on Sept. 30, citing relatives and people familiar with the case. The family had not received a written arrest notice. Wenjiang police published no specific allegations.
The timeline is plain. He was released in March 2025 after a four-year sentence, his second imprisonment since 2015. In August 2026 he was placed under administrative detention in Gansu. When that term expired on Aug. 17, the Subei detention center did not release him. He was handed to Chengdu police. The charge that came back was, again, “picking quarrels.”
That offense has no clear edge. Criticizing the government, marking June 4, or joining a house church can all be fitted into it. Early Rain pastor Wang Yi remains in prison. On Sept. 11, eleven congregants, most over 60, were taken from a teahouse Bible reading. Elder Wu Wuqing and member Shen Xiaoqing each got 10 days of administrative detention. The National Day reception spoke of national rejuvenation and social stability. In the same city, a man due for release was not released, the family got no paperwork, and a Bible reading became an illegal gathering.
Without independent courts, stability means watching the people who will not stay quiet.

That night, I went to the neighborhood next to Wanda Plaza. I carried the leaflets and placed them door by door along the hallways. Some doors had lights on, others were dark. I knew there were cameras, maybe someone watching. But I still went. I just wanted more people to see the truth.
It was the tenth night after Liu disappeared. I was still out there, leaving anti-dictatorship and anti-CCP leaflets at people’s doors. During the lockdowns, we recorded the truth — the pain and hunger caused by strict government control. After Liu was taken, I knew the danger was closer to me. But I chose to continue, because silence means accepting injustice. I wore a helmet and mask not to hide, but to keep the truth moving forward. I used no violence — only left a bit of light in the darkness.
