He threw for 298 yards and four touchdowns on Saturday.
His father died on Friday.
And until February, his father was the head coach of the team he plays for.
His name is Dante Reno. He is the quarterback at Yale. His father was Tony Reno, and Tony Reno was 52 years old.
Reno coached Yale for 14 seasons. He went 83-49 and won five Ivy League championships, in 2017, 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2025, second only to Carm Cozza in the history of the program. Before that he was a free safety at Worcester State, a Massachusetts kid who became the first native of that state to coach the Yale Bulldogs since 1910.
His son was a four star quarterback out of Sturbridge, Massachusetts, and he had his pick of schools.
He chose South Carolina. The SEC. The biggest stage in the sport.
Then in June of 2025 he left it.
He entered the transfer portal and went to Yale, to play quarterback for his father.
They got one season.
In 2025 the Bulldogs went 9-3, shared the Ivy League title, beat Harvard to clinch it, and won a playoff game over Youngstown State 43-42. Dante threw for 2,943 yards and 24 touchdowns.
Now look again at the list of his father's five championships. The last one is 2025.
The final title Tony Reno ever won, he won with his own son playing quarterback.
That was the whole thing. One year. A championship, a father on the sideline, a son under center.
In February, Tony Reno stepped down. Health. He had been on medical leave since the end of that season.
On Friday he died. The family has not shared a cause, and that is their business.
On Saturday, his son played.
Yale fell behind the Merrimack Warriors 21-7 in the second quarter. Then Dante went 22 of 39 for 298 yards and four touchdowns, and Yale outscored Merrimack 24-3 after halftime to win 41-24.
Afterward he explained it without being asked twice.
"I know him, and I know my dad, and he would want nothing less than for me to go out there and play. Not miss practice. Go to school. Be around the guys."
Then he posted five words.
"This one's for you pops."
Yale athletic director Victoria Chun said that while Reno's accomplishments on the field were remarkable, it is the relationships he built and the lives he changed that will define his legacy.
Be careful what you take from this. There is no correct way to grieve and this is not a standard. Plenty of people could not have put a helmet on Saturday, and they would be right not to.
Dante Reno just happened to know exactly what his father would have said.
He turned down the Southeastern Conference to spend one season with his dad.
They won a championship. Then they ran out of time. And the day after they ran out of time, he went out and played anyway.

Here's today's hardtech brief!
U.S. HARDTECH:
- The Space Force is telling satellite builders to prepare for roughly five times the volume within three to five years and is weighing multiyear buys to justify the factories. Its space systems chief put it as: if you nominally make ten, be ready to make forty.
- Oracle filed a force majeure notice on Project Jupiter, the 2.45GW Stargate campus in New Mexico, after the gas pipeline feeding it slipped to February 2027 and an air permit for its fuel cells stayed pending. The campus was designed to run on its own gas rather than the grid.
- The Navy added $876M to L3Harris for the Next Generation Jammer Low Band, the pod on the EA-18G Growler that blinds the long-wavelength radars used for early warning.
- Two GPS-denied navigation companies raised on the same morning, both in Colorado. Mesa Quantum took $11.8M led by Playground Global for chip-scale atomic clocks and accelerometers, and Locus Lock raised a strategic round with In-Q-Tel for software-defined satellite navigation receivers.
- The Navy opened the second phase of its medium unmanned surface vessel marketplace, a site where authorized buyers across the department can issue funded orders directly instead of running new competitions. Entries need ten days of autonomous open-ocean operation and room for 48 tonnes of containerized payload.
- Feather Robotics came out of stealth in San Francisco with a $7.6M pre-seed led by Gradient, selling a $30k modular humanoid that developers bring their own AI models to. It claims over $1M in revenue already, with robots working as cooks in Japanese restaurants. @featherrobotics
- The Coast Guard stood up an Office of Robotics and Autonomous Forces and created an enlisted Robotics Mission Specialist rating. A rating is a permanent career track with its own training and promotion ladder, which is a much bigger institutional commitment than an office.
- Allen Control Systems, the Austin company behind the Bullfrog autonomous gun turret, is opening a 16k square foot engineering office near Mountain View and hiring 35 to 50 engineers. Its cofounder said Silicon Valley was the natural choice for robotics talent, which is a useful signal that Austin is winning factories faster than it's winning autonomy engineers. @allencontrol
- Prime Minute came out of stealth in Palo Alto with a $15M pre-seed led by Eclipse with 8VC, pointing defense-grade autonomy at wildfire suppression that works at night and in high wind, when conventional air tankers are grounded. The team comes out of Palantir and Forterra, and Colorado gets prototypes later this year.
- Zero Infinity Partners closed a $156M second fund on an explicit reindustrialization thesis, naming metal midstream and aviation infrastructure among its targets. The bench comes out of Glencore, Stonepeak, and Antin rather than software venture, which is a different kind of money entering the space.
- El Segundo investor Van Espahbodi warned that defense tech has drawn tourists and FOMO, saying he has met beauty investors who now call themselves defense tech investors and pointing at ridiculous valuations for companies that have yet to produce anything. He has 25 years in aerospace and runs a fund built around SpaceX alumni moving horizontally into other physical industries. @vdadmahi
ALLIED HARDTECH:
- Italy signed a โฌ3.7B contract for two DDX destroyers through Fincantieri and Leonardo's joint venture, 13,500 tonnes each, delivering 2033 and 2035. Fincantieri takes about โฌ1.8B of the work and Leonardo about โฌ1.7B.
- Bechtel, Westinghouse, and Poland's state nuclear company agreed the main commercial terms for three AP1000 reactors on the Baltic coast, aiming at first concrete in 2028 and grid connection in 2036. Roughly a billion zloty has already gone to Polish suppliers.
- The Netherlands signed a letter of intent with Australia's Electro Optic Systems for the Apollo 100kW counter-drone laser, and is formally studying whether to build it domestically with a Dutch supply chain. Components could ship as early as mid-2027.

The first Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator (SB-AMTI) prototypes will be launched into low-Earth orbit before the end of September, Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink announced Monday. The upcoming mission comes after the Space Force tapped SpaceX in May to field an operational constellation by 2028.
โWe are applying the same approach to proliferating constellations. One example is our space-based interceptor program, which moved from initial contract to flight-ready hardware in less than one year,โ Meink said during AFAโs annual Air, Space and Cyber Conference. โWe are launching our AMTI โ or our air-moving target indication constellation โ this month.โ
The Space Force is also making progress on a separate Space-Based Ground Moving Target Indicator (SB-GMTI) constellation known as the Resilient Radar System-Ground (RRS-G), Lt. Gen. Gregory Gagnon, head of the Space Forceโs Combat Forces Command, told reporters Wednesday. https://t.co/CX9trcSm3k
From hundreds of kilometers away, a spacecraft can be little more than a blur. Until it isnโt.
WorldView Space brings high-interest objects in orbit into focus, giving operators visual intelligence that can help reveal whatโs actually happening: a deployment, a change in orientation, an anomaly or the condition of a spacecraft when answers matter.
Because when something unexpected happens in orbit, seeing it clearly can change what happens next.

The Space Force wants to know what goes bump in geosynchronous orbit.
On Friday, the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) and Space Systems Command (SSC) announced GHOST-R, a joint effort to bring low-cost reconnaissance to GEO under SSCโs RG-XX programโthe program of record for the Space Forceโs proliferated in-space reconnaissance layer.
Slated for launch in 2028, GHOST-R aims to leverage commercial space vehicles, buses, and electro-optical payloads to characterize resident space objects, provide battle-damage assessment, and enhance positive identification.
Payload reporter @vicky_woodburn dives into the details of the mission, and what it means for the future of GEO. Link below.
