For years, a persistent and lazy narrative has been peddled by political detractors; the claim that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the Wazirin Adamawa, permanently resides in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, UAE, and only returns to Nigeria when an election cycle begins.

However, a closer look at the facts, his massive domestic economic footprint, as well as his intense political engagements, reveal a completely different reality. The “Dubai Residency” tag is not only a gross exaggeration; it is a calculated political myth.

While it is no secret that the former Vice President, like many globally influential Statesmen, holds international business interests and real estate ties abroad. Unlike many who park their wealth entirely abroad, Atiku’s most significant investments are deeply rooted in Nigerian soil, directly impacting local economies and providing livelihoods for thousands of citizens. 

From the American University of Nigeria, AUN, Yola, a premier institution shaping the minds of Africa’s next generation, to Adama Beverages and various Agricultural and Logistics enterprises, Atiku remains one of the largest Employers of labour in North-Eastern Nigeria. 

A man does not build an empire of domestic industries, if his heart and home are elsewhere.

The narrative that Atiku only appears every four years falls apart entirely under the weight of his relentless schedule. Over the past several months, the former Vice President has been the primary anchor of Nigeria’s evolving political landscape, operating directly out of his residences in Federal Capital Territory, FCT, and Adamawa State.

Far from being detached, Atiku has been at the forefront of the most significant political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections. Following his strategic move to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, his schedule has been a whirlwind of domestic activities, such as High-level Coalitions: Holding critical in-person consultative meetings within Nigeria, alongside key political figures, to build a formidable opposition front.

Party Grassroots Engagement: Formally submitting his expression of interest and nomination forms at the ADC national headquarters, in Abuja.

National Policy Debate: Actively challenging current governance policies, standing as a vocal defender of the Nigerian masses regarding economic and legislative reforms.

To mistake international diplomacy and private business travels for “abandoning home”, is to misunderstand modern Leadership. True statesmanship requires a global footprint. Atiku’s ability to navigate international corridors of power should be viewed as an asset bringing global perspective and elite networks back to Nigeria, rather than a point of criticism.

The resurgence of killings in the North-Central shows clearly that the Tinubu administration has abandoned the region to bloodshed. Kwara, once safe, is now a hotspot of bandit and kidnap attacks. Niger State has seen militants attack military bases, murder soldiers, and even massacre worshippers in a mosque. Plateau and Benue continue to bury their dead while the Federal Government looks away.

By May this year, just two years of Tinubu’s rule, over 10,000 lives had been lost in Northern states, with Benue accounting for more than half. Since then, mass killings continue weekly, while the government pretends nothing is wrong. This is a monumental failure in the basic duty of securing lives and property.

Instead of fighting insecurity, the ruling APC is fighting the opposition using thugs, infiltrators, and hired hooligans to break up political meetings in Kaduna, Kebbi, and Ogun. In each case, security forces failed to act and even blamed the victims. The silence of the APC leadership is proof of complicity.

Let it be clear: violence is a vicious circle that will eventually consume those who use it. Any politician who needs violence to win is desperate, unpopular, and dangerous to democracy.

We remind the Nigeria Police: you are funded by taxpayers, not by the APC. Your duty is to remain neutral, fair, and constitutional. Anything less is betrayal of public trust. -AA
