it is the type of film that led me to believe I disliked horror as a genre through my mid-teen years. It relies simply on doing unpleasant things to its characters graphically, sometimes abruptly, sometimes painfully slowly. This is its central gambit to get the audience to care

Let me tell you about a cool guy named Odysseus. He fought in the Trojan War - he was the one who came up with the horse plan.

He was king of a place called Ithaca, and had a beautiful queen, Penelope. So obviously, when the war was over he sailed straight for home with his men.

Maybe a better answer is “it’s foundational to the western canon”. Then, that’s why it’s in the schools. And what do we mean when we say that? We mean “lots of people who wrote other things knew this story”. We are primed by its sea of descendants to find The Odyssey familiar.
