That figure and, especially, the meaning attached to “not European” require important context: statistics about foreign origin or migration background are not the same thing as statistics about nationality, citizenship, or whether someone is “European.”

Musk nevertheless argues that the demographic transformation of parts of Europe is already a reality and accuses political elites of refusing to acknowledge its scale.

You can agree with Musk or consider his rhetoric a dangerous exaggeration. But immigration and integration have become some of the defining political issues facing Europe.

And the real question is bigger than Elon Musk:

What will Europe look like in 10 or 20 years — and who gets to decide its future?
