DOOM: The Dark Ages | Revelations
~ Melee Weapon Exploration ~
In the very early days of development on DOOM: The Dark Ages | Revelations I was tasked to explore some melee weapon options. I tried out several things including a Hammer, Sword, Spear and specialty 'trick' shield that could transform.
I started with a lot of quick sketches of various ideas before taking a few into 3D.
The first round of 3D blockouts were done to explore how these could look to the player and more importantly how they would affect the screen space. Throughout all of Dark Ages and Revelations productions I worked closely with the design team to make sure we had a good and safe balance of how much space weapons took up on screen. This has been common practice for the franchise all the way back to DOOM (2016).
After the first round of 3D blockout, the feedback was to replace the shield with the melee weapon which at the time I thought was wild…. But definitely the right call.
The subtle or dramatic iterations are always helpful to also see if we may or may not want to do something.
Just a note that I didn’t come up with the idea of doing a spear as it was part of the conversation at the time. Nor did I tackle the final pass on it; that was done by Ethan Evans! Shotgun and Shield Models taken from engine, all other weapon blackouts modeled by me. Also, before these iterations I had even done some traditional sketches on paper which unfortunately I do not have.

Everyone wants you dead.
There's a killer on the loose.
And you still got a case to solve.
Good thing you got a tough broad, a fast car and a whole lotta weapons.
Fallen Aces - Episode 2: Shadow of Death is OUT NOW!
I’d argue he’s right.
For every “Rockstar is doing the impossible with graphics”, there’s triple that amount playing games that can still run on PS4.
We’re definitely at a point where it’ll take more than graphics to sell games, especially going into next-gen.
DOOM: The Dark Ages | Revelations -
Hospital Interior
While working on the ideas for the exterior and street views, I had the opportunity to come up with an idea of what the gameplay and interior space within the Hospital during the flashback sequence could be.
This was done prior to a narrative or level design pass so I was the first out of the gate to tackle some ideas here. My favorite kind of levels in games are ones where you understand the full context of the space and if possible it loops back in on itself making a complete story almost. The core idea presented to me to solve from creative was : The Slayer enters the hospital which was under a terrorist attack, making your way through what was a children's ward (to foreshadow the girl at the end) and then down to an established armory. Essentially the only direction was the the Slayer was sent to this hospital to find and destroy the terrorist armaments. Unfortunately there would be some collateral damage…
Modeling my own take on the hospital layout combined with some assets provided from the art team , some of which were actually from the Arc Facility and other levels in DOOM Eternal (essentially earth stuff). One direction note that didn’t make it to the final, the UAC logo you see around the level is also from the original DOOM. At the time I was working on this, which has since changed, the intent was this took place in 93 (which is why the computers are big and the monitors are CRT)… which is also why you have the DOOM 93 shotgun which I also got to design… more details on that later.
Another art direction note: The children's ward was designed to be a low light/night time and day time observation room for multiple patients. I based it on the idea of the solar system with some planets as large tiles on the floor and others as hanging planets in the indented ceiling.
It was definitely a challenge given the subject matter but from an artistic perspective an interesting departure from the modern DOOM Games up to this point.

I know u haven’t posted much about the DLC but I absolutely love it, it makes me really want this spear in the base game even tho it wouldn’t work properly.
