Following yesterday’s shark attack in Panama City, hospital officials say the victim has undergone surgery, remains in critical condition, and may be transferred to a trauma center for additional treatment.

The attack occurred in bay waters, not in the Gulf. NOAA research biologist Dr. John Carlson says shark sightings are common in the Florida Panhandle this time of year, and sharks often move into coastal waters, including bays, to give birth. Some bays can serve as nursery grounds for young sharks.

While shark attacks remain extremely rare, experts recommend avoiding swimming near people who are fishing, staying out of murky water when possible, and avoiding the water at dawn and dusk when sharks are often more active.
