This Diwali tweet from @realDonaldTrump is resonating widely in India and far beyond - those following geopolitics should understand why.

There is widespread perception in India that the U.S. was somehow involved in (or at the very least approved of) the regime change in Bangladesh that has resulted in (among other things): horrific attacks against religious minorities, especially Hindus; the release of terrorists from jail; and the unbanning of an Islamist party accused of terrorism.

This after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan left the Taliban (no friends of India) in power and well armed with billions in American weapons. And activities by American diplomats in India and Pakistan that are politically sensitive.

Add to this the controversy over (Five Eyes partner) Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau's statements, and the ongoing cases involving Khalistanis in the U.S. and Canada.

The result is U.S. - India relations are decidedly strained (in spite of solid and deepening defense ties). This is perhaps - totally coincidentally of course - exactly what Beijing, Moscow, Islamabad and others would like.

In this context, the tweet is a signal that a Trump administration would take a very different approach with the world's largest democracy. Not only is it being noted in Delhi and Dhaka (and Beijing, Moscow, etc.), but in Ottawa - and across the diaspora.

This one was important and is worth tracking.
