The Ad Fraud Files 🗂️
Case 003: BADBOX 2.0
Smart TVs, tablets, phones, streaming boxes, projectors, even car infotainment systems…
BADBOX 2.0 — discovered mere months ago — is an Android malware supply chain operation 🦠 and the direct successor to the 2023 BADBOX botnet that hijacked tens of thousands of devices for the perpetration of ad fraud.
This time, over 10 million devices were compromised worldwide. Some shipped from the factory already infected, others were compromised the moment they were first powered on, and many more through look-alike 'decoy' apps downloaded from unofficial stores — a full supply chain of infection.
Once the backdoor was active, BADBOX 2.0 ran completely silent in the background, turning unsuspecting consumers — and their everyday devices — into a global fraud engine ⚙️
The bad actors behind BADBOX 2.0 used it to run large-scale programmatic and click fraud, siphoning ad budgets. At the same time, they hid behind victims’ IP addresses to carry out a wide array of digital crimes, such as credential theft and DDoS attacks. Every action was cloaked as legitimate traffic, making the operation almost impossible to distinguish from real, genuine users.
Google, HUMAN Security, and law enforcement joined forces to dismantle BADBOX 2.0. Together, they:
💥 Took down its command servers
🚫 Suspended linked publisher accounts
🏛️ Filed a federal lawsuit against 25 alleged operators earlier this year
The case remains ongoing, with the FBI issuing a public warning about the botnet in June 2025.
Ad fraud is always evolving and BADBOX 2.0 shows just how big the stakes are. At Verasity, we keep a close watch on operations like these to keep our advertising infra ready to defend ad campaign integrity, publisher revenue, and advertiser budgets worldwide.
Web3 just got a little cuter... 😼

The Ad Fraud Files 🗂️
Case 002: Uber vs. Phunware
We’re back with Case 002 in The Ad Fraud Files, this time we’re taking a look at one of the most high-profile ad fraud disputes ever... and yes, it involves Uber.
In 2015, Uber hired Phunware, a NASDAQ-listed mobile advertising company, to drive installs for its ride-hailing app. Over time, Uber noticed irregularities and alleged that instead of delivering real users, Phunware had:
🖱️ Used click flooding to steal credit for organic installs
🔀 Ran auto-redirects that sent users to the App Store without clicking on an ad
🚫 Placed ads on adult sites despite Uber’s contracts banning those placements
When Uber dug in, whistleblowers came forward and internal emails surfaced — including one that read:
'Guys it’s… time to spin some more BS to Uber to keep the lights on.'
Uber concluded that 90% of the installs Phunware billed for were actually ORGANIC, meaning they came from real users who downloaded the app on their own, without any ad spend driving them. Rather than pay millions for installs they didn’t receive, Uber pushed back. In 2017, Phunware sued for the unpaid invoices and Uber hit back with a countersuit alleging fraud.
After four years of discovery battles, the court sanctioned Phunware for deleting key evidence (emails, logs, placement data), dismissed Phunware’s claims entirely, and entered default judgment for Uber — leading to a $6M settlement in 2020.
💡 This case is a reminder that ad fraud can take years to untangle and most brands don’t have Uber’s legal muscle. That’s why we built Verasity. Our blockchain + AI-powered advertising infra detects ad fraud and writes it to an immutable ledger before it costs you millions (or four years in court).

We’re kicking off a new series: The Ad Fraud Files 🗂️
It’s a problem that drains billions from the digital advertising industry annually and Verasity is dismantling it head-on through a suite of patented blockchain, AI, and ML-powered technologies.
To show why this mission matters, over the coming weeks we’ll be uncovering some of the biggest ad fraud scandals... the cases that forever changed the ecosystem we’re fighting to protect.
Case 001: 3ve (Eve)
From 2013 to 2018, 3ve quietly became one of the most destructive ad fraud botnets ever seen. It infected over 1.7M PCs across the globe, turning everyday devices into fake traffic machines.
At its peak, 3ve was:
⚠️ Issuing 3B+ fake ad bid requests per day
🌐 Running 10K+ fake websites built just to show ads
🎭 Employing 60K+ accounts to sell fake ad inventory
📡 Controlling 1M+ IP addresses to disguise its bots
💸 Stealing an estimated $29M in ad revenue
What made 3ve so dangerous was its ability to mimic real people online. The traffic looked authentic — both on desktop and mobile — making it incredibly difficult to detect.
🚨 After years of draining the industry, 3ve was finally shut down in 2018 through a coordinated effort by the FBI, Google, DHS, White Ops, and other major organizations. The takedown resulted in 13 indictments, along with dozens of servers and domains seized.
3ve stands as one of the largest ad fraud operations ever brought down and a stark reminder of how much is at stake in digital advertising… from billions in ad spend and revenue flows to the integrity of the supply chain itself.

🚨Protests Erupt in Indonesia.
In Jakarta thousands have been protesting against corruption and exploitation:
🚔 At least one civilian was killed after being run over by a Brimob vehicle
📢 Students are demanding an end to lawmakers’ obscene privileges — housing allowances worth 50M rupiah a month while ordinary people struggle to survive.
✊ Workers are on the streets, calling for an end to outsourcing and fighting for dignity, fairness, and protection on the job.
🚔 The government responds with tear gas, water cannons, and repression, but the people refuse to be silenced.
📱 Authorities are even pressuring social media platforms to censor voices of dissent.
The protests aren’t just about allowances or outsourcing. It’s about justice. It’s about ordinary Indonesians saying enough is enough.
.@WebX_Asia 2025 by @coin_post is a wrap! ✨
This year marked VeraViews’ largest offline event presence to date as Platinum Sponsors at Japan’s flagship Web3 conference, a milestone that also carried extra weight with the same organizers (WebX and CoinPost) already using our technology stack.
🔹 A first for us: it was the debut of VeraViews in an offline environment since launching our end-to-end advertising supply chain and the UAE's first home-grown Ad Exchange.
🔹 A perfect fit: WebX 2025 brought together a huge presence of publishers — one of our core clientele — giving us face-to-face opportunities to showcase how our solutions unlock new revenue streams from video content.
We were delighted to welcome strong interest at our booth and hold impactful meetings with some of the leading media publishers in the Asia-Web3 space. This included @CoinDeskjapan, @CoinMarketCap, SBI Investment, @Foresight_News, and many more who are already exploring how VeraViews can help them turn traffic into monetization opportunities.
The experience underscored the versatility and broad demand for our solutions, built to serve brands across all archetypes, industries, and ecosystems… including Web3.
We were proud to be represented by our CEO, CPO, CMO, and Marketing team, who connected directly with stakeholders and leaders from every corner of the business landscape.
A huge thank you to everyone who visited our booth and connected with us. 🙏 We’re excited to nurture the newly created relationships and continue building momentum after this bustling two-day experience.
See you at the next big stage!
