Canadian sports betting & gaming industry news, commentary & access to the best online sportsbooks for players in ๐จ๐ฆ & the legal Ontario market. 19+ DYODD
Congratulations to Alberta on the launch of its legal sports betting market. Legal AB sportsbooks now display the AiGC logo.
Early Grade: B+. Why not higher?
Self-exclusion access must be more obvious/frictionless. Higher taxes/fees seem to have prevented some brand entrances.
Ontario is adding a sports betting brand: DAZN Bet
License issued yesterday & valid for 2 years. Already live in ๐ฌ๐ง๐ฎ๐น๐ฉ๐ช๐ช๐ธ & ๐ซ๐ท.
In ๐จ๐ฆ DAZN streams all NFL games, UEFA & FIFA club matches, Bundesliga & is partnered with FUBO for EPL & Serie A. TBD as to iGO launch date.
Lotteries & Gaming Saskatchewan just reported 25/26.
PlayNow by @HomeSIGA, the "legal" SK online casino & sportsbook, brought income of $12.4m on revenue of $29.9m .
A partnership with iGO could have brought over 5X this income. It could now also provide proper self-exclusion.
Saskatchewan @ Calgary: Dominant brand with appended iGaming Ontario logo as national TSN overlay ad.
How many people in ON watched this game? ~Zero
Live in AB soon, but open from Gibraltar for the "rest of ๐จ๐ฆ", when do @HomeSIGA & @PremierScottMoe act to benefit Saskatchewan?
Not all iGO brands are created equal: ToonieBet has punishing terms.
Eg: Deposit $200. Bet $100 on an outright market many months from resolution. Then you build the remaining $100 to $200 on games. Try to withdraw. You can't because the outright bet is tying you up.
Partners!

On Friday, the number of soon-to-be-legal Alberta online sports betting options crept up, with 888 added to the latest list of licensed operators.
We see just two major Ontario sportsbook brands yet to be added, with about a month until AB market launch.

"Illegal" operators are emailing affiliates about their exit from Alberta: No license coming.
Regulation means the vast majority of major unlicensed brands will STOP serving AB customers.
This is what makes self-exclusion/harm-reduction robust, rather than hollow as in BC+QC.
According to @RobShaw_BC, BC Finance Minister @BrendaBaileyBC thinks BCLC has 51% of the online market, estimating the "illegal" market at $441 M.
We estimate it at >3X that.
Ontario copied uber-progressive DENMARK, yet BC remains rooted in harm-inducing, money-losing policy.
@RobShaw_BC@BrendaBaileyBC Rob is technically incorrect in stating that the $441 M would be on the table for BC to grab.
If they copied AB/ON, they could earn 22.4% or 20% of a market likely worth ~$1.5B/yr & implement real harm reduction policies, over the currently hollow ones.

Like the @CPC_HQ, BC Conservatives elected a leader that will be unelectable in a broader election. Conservatives generally must lean to the centre to be elected. Now, super-progressive BC only has a hard-right alternative to the NDP.
Bad news for regulated iGaming hopes in BC.

The BC Conservatives have declared Kerry-Lynne Findlay as its new leader, which one political analyst says is a sign of the party moving towards populism.

DAZN Bet will also launch in Alberta: licensed in the May 29 AGLC list.
So far, the higher license fee + the $50k application fee per brand appear to be preventing several operators from bringing over all their ON brands.
Plus, 6 weeks left, some big operators remain unlisted.

Caesars was bought out last week by someone in the gambling industry.
Not on our bingo card: privately held People Inc., "America's largest digital and print publisher" reportedly wants to buy $MGM
Betting story to watch:
The long-awaited verdict on EPL charges vs Man City may arrive soon, perhaps before the FWC.
All EPL top-2/4/6 bets etc will settle this Sunday. How will bookies handle a June 5th points deduction that drastically alters the table 2 weeks after the fact?
