Dr. Alexander Atta Yaw Kyerematen (1916–1972) was a pioneering Ghanaian anthropologist, cultural administrator, and scholar widely regarded as one of the foremost preservers of Ghana’s cultural heritage.
Born in Pataase near Kumasi, he received his early education locally and at Adisadel College before earning advanced degrees in anthropology from institutions including Durham University, Oxford, and Cambridge. He combined public service with academia, serving as Town Clerk of Kumasi and later as a Research Fellow in African Studies.

His most significant achievement was founding the Kumasi Cultural Centre (now the Centre for National Culture, Kumasi) in collaboration with the Asantehene. As its first director, he transformed it into a leading institution dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional Ghanaian arts, crafts, music, dance, folklore, and cultural education.
Kyerematen was also an accomplished playwright and theatre director who produced performances celebrating Ghanaian history and identity. He held influential positions such as Vice-President of the Sociological Society of Ghana and Chairman of the Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

His lifelong dedication helped elevate cultural preservation to a national priority in post-independence Ghana. He is remembered as a key figure whose work continues to shape Ghana’s cultural landscape. He was the father of statesman John Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen.
