@BarbBanfieldRN Likewise, when Vance says "my wife has three kids" it's weird because we know they're his kids too. We read more into his statement because of what he didn't say. Grice was a philosopher who proposed 4 maxims of conversational cooperation that are useful for understanding subtext

@BarbBanfieldRN They are "rules" which help explain how utterances are interpreted in context. If I say "I have 2 kids" when I actually have 3, it violates the "maxim" that listeners expect speakers to not leave out relevant info. You might wonder why I am not including the 3rd kid. It's weird.
