The British Academy is seeking to commission up to ten discussion papers that will contribute to our Net Zero Governance policy programme. The proposal deadline is 7 June 2024. Full details are provided in the Terms of Reference - more details below: https://t.co/NAveNXDcmx
Proud to see this published! Clear and committed leadership and a people-centred approach are critical for achieving net zero (both with and beyond technological change). All thoughts welcome 💭
A new British Academy report, 'Governance for Net Zero' warns that the changes required to meet the UK’s ambitious net zero goal are “critically dependent” on the quality of governance. Read the full report here:

I am honoured to be appointed as co-chair of @JTCScotland & look forward to working with Dave Reay and fellow commissioners to ensure we have an orderly and just transition to net zero that addresses existing inequalities and does not create new ones.
In a new article in the Journal of the British Academy, Senior Policy Adviser Chizitera Pennington and Professor Tim O’Riordan FBA argue that governance is vital if the UK is to meet its legally binding carbon-based emissions targets. Now available:

We believe that Scotland cannot overcome these challenges by making minor tweaks to the status quo, or by simply ameliorating the worst excesses of a broken model. Instead, we must embrace bold new ideas to transform the economy.
It was a pleasure to deliver a workshop with @MegIncludem at the #povertyinjustice event - discussing the challenges in the current discourse about young people and 'antisocial behavior' and the value of hobbies, recreation and culture to wellbeing and prevention 🚴♀️🎸🎳🎮
Thank you to everyone who joined us for today’s #povertyInjustice event.
A range of voices from tons of different backgrounds in the room - appropriate given poverty’s intersectionality - with folk travelling from all over 🏴 to inspire, inform and challenge one another. ✊
“Poverty as the wallpaper of practice”. @MegIncludem talks of how we often lose the person as we sadly become so used to the families living in poverty. Important research from @Includem2000 taking a deep dive to highlight the negative impact that poverty has on families.
Our thanks to @PFOKane for referencing our latest research in yesterday's debate.

Say it again and say it louder:
⚖💲POVERTY IS A POLITICAL CHOICE ⚖💲
It was a joy to come together with organisations and MSPs outside @ScotParl committing to end child poverty by 2030. A crucial opportunity to break out my 🌈 rainbow trousers 🌈 @Includem2000
Often those that have caused harm have been victims of harm themselves - @MegIncludem highlights giving evidence at the @SP_ECYP
Restorative practice, that is trauma informed, can help recognise this link ⚖️⚖️⚖️
THIS IS NOT INEVITABLE. Poverty is a political choice - The UK, Scottish and local governments have the responsibility to bring meaningful change for children and young people facing destitution in one of the wealthiest nations in the world.
How do we raise an alarm that is still ringing?
Today's government figures have a stark message of stagnation in poverty in Scotland - at almost 1 in 4 children. Giving up on what most adults take for granted - such as food and warmth - is becoming increasingly normalised.
All children should be able to access their essential needs to food, to a warm home or to an education. Today’s figures make clear that we are yet to tackle the fundamental barrier to making children’s rights real in Scotland.

Thanks to our Seed of Hope project, we've planted 80 trees so far and on track to have planted a tree for every child, young person and family we support across Scotland.
Look out for some exciting updates coming soon!
