Gabe Newell owns the majority share in Steam. Now, I know Newell somewhat. We've met. We've talked. He's not a close friend by any means. But it is by his will and genius that Steam is the way it is - a triumph of good guy capitalism. A great site for finding games, with cheap prices, frequent sales. Well ... I don't need to praise it here. You guys all know about it.
When Newell passes away, it's unclear what will happen with Steam. Doubtless his shares will go to his family. Will they continue his vision? Or will they sell out to one of the many circling sharks who have been trying to buy it for years? What will happen if the sharks DO get their teeth into Steam?
I believe that in that case Steam will go to hell in a handbasket. Owned by men in suits who don't give a sh*t about quality or the consumer. Probably it will become a subscription service or worse. If it gets sold to a horror show like Electronic Arts or Disney it'll be a nightmare.
The only mitigating feature is that a different service might arise, but it will need to fight the rotting lumbering corpse of Steam to establish itself. I am content that since I am several years older than Gabe, it is plausible that I won't live to see this terrible day. But you might.
Gabe Newell, to me, is literally barring the gates to Hell for us all.

4 more sleeps until the Kickstarter launch!!
Deeper into the backstory..
Fact 3: Maybe it was just laziness, or because I had a lot more going on in life, but one day, I just stopped playing VR games as much as I did in the 2016-2020 era.
VR gaming felt stale and tiring, and after a long day of work, I found myself defaulting to playing a JRPG or a visual novel instead.
I thought, maybe I'm just really weird, but I wish there were more VR games that were fun but didn't make you melt into a sweat fest or require a ton of energy and room space.
When I told this to people from the industry, they looked at me funny: "Isn't the whole point of VR, being able to move and use your whole body? Go back to making flatscreen games, you idiot."
But there it was, the ultimate contradiction. Videogames abstract away complex physical actions behind button presses so you can do things you could never physically pull off in real life, at the comfort of your desk or couch.
But in VR gaming at the time, there was no abstraction - if you wanted to do a backflip in VR you had to do it in real life. Spatial controls are one of the coolest things about VR, but also one of its biggest limiting factors.
There are a limited range of actions the average human can pull off unless they train themself for months. So if we depended on physical movements that the average human can do, you'd basically have a very limited number of games, unless you wanted people to run out of stamina within minutes.
I also thought, don't people play videogames to relax, not get MORE tired, unless its a fitness game? I'm not certain every gamer in the world is out to play games to get a six pack, but a lot of VR games are certainly designed like that.
I felt like unless something changed, VR gaming would be forever limited to those who had crazy energy and room space.
Because of the way VR gaming was "supposed to be designed", the average person would only be able to play for 30 minutes to an hour(unless its a social game). But the whole point of escapism is to be able to lose yourself in a game for hours.. not have a sweaty one off.
There's also the survivorship bias - if you asked a VR gamer if this is a problem, they would likely say no, because that's what they knew they were getting themselves into.
There weren't enough people asking why people who could buy VR WEREN'T getting into VR. Most people accepted the way VR gaming was at the time as "the way it should be", which reinforced these biases and formed a wall against those who thought differently.
In reality, I think VR games can be so much more than what we see today. It's like a guy from 1970 saying videogames will forever look like Pong.
It didn't matter how many people called me an idiot or criticized me, I had to do something about it.
And so PROJECT MIX became my first serious attempt at tackling this huge challenge that I believe is the next step for mainstream VR gaming.
