Eye Tests Predict Parkinson’s Progression
Optical coherence tomography, an ophthalmological tool, can effectively monitor neurodegeneration in Parkinson's disease by measuring changes in retinal thickness.
Their study reveals that this degeneration in the retina often occurs before cognitive and motor symptoms appear, potentially serving as an early indicator of disease progression.
By examining Parkinson's patients over several years, the team observed that those with early retinal thinning experienced more rapid cognitive decline and more severe disease progression later on.
This breakthrough suggests that a commonly used eye examination could become a vital, non-invasive method for predicting the trajectory of Parkinson’s disease, enabling earlier and more personalized treatment options.
