Anyway I think of each incarnation of Link and Zelda as their own unique person more akin to the Avatar cycle. So it makes sense they don’t always end up together because each version of Courage and Wisdom is shaped by life experience.
I've always liked Link and Malon, but It also showed me that not EVERY Link needs a romantic subplot with EVERY Zelda.
I think it's far more beautiful that while Link and Zelda are indeed eternally connected, that doesn't always mean they're meant for each other.
