A gentle queer language PSA from someone who is both a lesbian and identifies with the femme identity 🩷
“Fem” and “femme” aren’t interchangeable.
Fem is generally a descriptor for feminine presentation. Femme is also a queer identity with deep roots in lesbian history, particularly butch/femme culture. It doesn’t simply mean “feminine woman.”
And yes, nonbinary lesbians exist! (Haii it me)
Femme and butch have always had complex relationships with gender, and neither identity can or should be reduced to “woman who is feminine” or “woman who is masculine.”
Historically, femme also meant more than just an aesthetic. Some femmes were able to move through public spaces with more perceived heterosexuality or gender conformity than visibly butch lesbians. That relative privilege could (and did) put femmes in a position to stand up for, advocate for, and protect their butches and community members who were more immediately targeted for their gender nonconformity.
That doesn’t mean femmes were universally “straight-passing” or protected from homophobia. Femme lesbians faced plenty of their own erasure and discrimination. But that history of solidarity is a very important part of butch/femme culture.
And whenever this conversation comes up, someone inevitably mentions “femme fatale.”
Yes, femme literally means “woman” in French, and femme fatale is a French phrase that long predates the modern queer identity. That doesn't make every English use of “femme” interchangeable with “fem” or erase the specific meaning the word developed within queer and lesbian communities.
Words can have different meanings depending on their cultural and linguistic context. “Femme fatale exists” and “femme has a specific history as a queer identity” can both be true at the same time.
So when femme is used simply as a prettier spelling of “fem” or a catch all for anyone feminine, it can feel like an identity shaped by lesbian culture, gender, resistance, love, and community is being flattened into a term for a girly aesthetic.
This isn't about shaming anyone who didn't know. Queer history isn't exactly something most of us were taught in school. It's just a gentle reminder that our language has history, and learning where our words come from is one small way we can care for the communities that gave them to us.
I'll include some links in the replies with more important info on the history of the word femme. 🫶🏻
