Why we do not need elitism in education | Sol Gamsu |
Recorded this as part of #TEDxNewcastleCollege last year just before covid & lockdown.
It was a great event - thank you to @NCL_Coll_HE for organising a really excellent day.

The lopsided balance of power between capital and labour: the workers have no ability to refuse to wear the cameras which are training systems which will eventually replace the workers themselves
Many thanks to my research advisor Dr. Sol Gamsu (@SolGamsu) for his valuable theoretical support. He invited me to Durham University through the TÜBİTAK (@TubitakBIDEB) 2214-A fellowship to further develop my research.
@wesstreeting No offer on pay.
20,000 doctors locked out of training with a waiting list over 7 million and you've only offered 1000 jobs this year.
What exactly have you tried @wesstreeting? You've had a year to sort this. The failure clearly lies at your doorstep.
Time to negotiate.
In a dispute over pay and jobs, you
1. Offered no movement on pay
2. Offered no new jobs
3. Called doctors 'moaning minnies' and 'juvenile delinquents' in the press
Dr Ayo Moiett arrested for revolutionary act of demanding another human being (on hunger strike over Gaza) receive medical attention.
Detained standing outside a prison with a stethoscope, whilst Black.
His offence? Witnessing state cruelty and saying no

Zack Polanski words then are as important now:
‘Shabana Mahmood is being deeply irresponsible’
‘Conflating, ultimately weaponising an antisemitic attack against those protesting against genocide is wrong’
Speaking to truth.
Imagine someone nicks £40 from your £100.
They give you £20 back, then call you greedy for asking for the rest.
That’s what doctors are facing.
They are being paid 20% less in real terms than they were in 2008.
Full pay restoration is not an unreasonable demand.
Justice Secretary and Deputy PM David Lammy runs away from hunger strikers family. It’s been 35 days of hunger striking in British prison with no response for him.
They demand immediate bail. They have been held in prison for upto 2 years without charge for Palestinian activism

🔴 BREAKING: Israel Moves to Legalize State Executions of Palestinians
Israel’s National Security Committee has approved a bill mandating the death penalty for any Palestinian convicted of killing an Israeli, clearing it for a first Knesset vote. The bill bans commutation of the sentence.
Netanyahu’s “hostage coordinator” Gal Hirsch reversed his opposition, saying “the reality has changed” after captives were freed; he had earlier warned it could endanger their lives.
It also lowers the judicial threshold for execution, allowing death sentences by simple majority, not requiring unanimity. Israeli military courts already convict some 99.7% of Palestinians they try.

Remember the mural? Remember how people studied it in order to show it was antisemitic? But where is the analysis here? Where's the shock? Where's the outcry at this bit of modern Der Stürmer? Why the silence?
