.@OleMissRebels is currently hosting @MUMI_2019, a conference dedicated to ending mass incarceration. At the same time, #CharlesOverby, the chairman of @CenterOverby, has been sitting on the board of CoreCivic (the 2nd largest private prison company in the U.S.) since 2001.
Tonight, #CharlesOverby of the @CenterOverby said he was “proud of his affiliation with @CoreCivic.“ Overby has made millions of dollars from incarcerating people while he has been on the board of CoreCivic since 2001. This is the type of person @OleMissRebels honors.
We’ll be having another #MSFreedomLetters event tonight in the Tupelo Room at Barnard Observatory from 5 to 7PM. Last time we wrote to 120 people and tonight we’re aiming for 200! Come on out!

@MUMI_2019-- "UNAPOLOGETICALLY ABOLITIONIST"...now this is a conference! We were immediately urged to get outside of just our conversation in this room, and to bring attention to #CharlesOverby@CenterOverby's relationship to private prisons!
The university likes to say that our racist history is "complicated." But this is the present. @OleMissRebels @MSPublicUniv - is it "complicated" that you are choosing to honor someone who incarcerates people for profit? #CharlesOverby#UMPrivatePrisons

While he's been on the board, CoreCivic has paid millions of dollars lobbying against bills that would allow the public to have access to their records through FOIA requests. Yet #CharlesOverby claims to be a fighter for the “freedom of the press.” #UMPrivatePrisons
We can’t have a realistic conversation about “people not voting” in Mississippi without acknowledging that nearly 1 in 10 Mississippians are currently disenfranchised. “Getting out the vote” has to go much deeper than handing out flyers.
