Ran a coding agent for ~38 hours on a repo-wide refactor. 128,957 lines of code reviewed.

The App Behavior didn't change a bit, everything worked just as before, with 36,478 less lines of code.

The key was not “let it code longer.”

The key was strict evals + checkpoint discipline:

preserve behavior
scan duplication
scan dead code
run lint/typecheck/tests
audit file sizes
smoke test the runtime
log every checkpoint
This is why cleanup matters so much with AI coding.

AI makes adding code cheap. Without cleanup, you quickly get duplicate helpers, stale routes, dead files, misleading docs, and behavior nobody fully owns.

Long-running agents need rails:

spec -> small change -> verify -> remove obsolete paths -> document -> continue

That’s how you get 38 hours of refactoring without turning the repo into a pile of parallel implementations
