“A Carthaginian resurrected in our time in his homeland would find, in a modern Tunisian city, the same narrow and winding alleys, with simple whitewashed houses covered with terraces or domes, just as accustomed to admire.”
- G. C. Charles-Picard, La vie quotidienne à Carthage
The Carthaginian tree frog 🐸 (Hyla carthaginiensis) is a species of tree frog from humid coastal areas of northwestern Tunisia notably.
The species is in danger of extinction.

🧵 Baal Qornaim & Jebel Boukornine—The Mountain of the "Two Horns" 🏔️
1/6 Did you know modern-day Jebel Boukornine (جبل بوقرنين) in Tunisia carries the legacy of an ancient Punic god?
Its name means "Mountain of Two Horns"—a direct nod to Baal Qornaim, the "Lord of Two Horns."
“Neo-Punicism”will inevitably become the way, as more and more Tunisians across the country claim this heritage.
Carthage is to rebuild and it is not about symbols : manufacturing high value goods, military strength, cultural soft power… are priorities for Tunisia.
1/ 🧵 “Tanit (likely pronounced Tinnīt) Pene Baal”, the patron goddess of Carthage, has no known counterpart in the “Phoenician” world. Her cult was likely promoted by the Magonids in the 4th century BCE, eventually exploded Baal Hammon, making her Carthage’s principal deity.

-Trebia River : December 218 BCE
-Cannae : August 216 BCE.

The Romans discovered pomegranates during the Punic Wars, giving the fruit a Carthaginian heritage.
Carthaginians are credited with the Latin name of the fruit: Punica granatum.
Punica comes from Arbor punica "Carthaginian tree", while granatum translates to "many seeds."
What did Carthaginians call themselves ?
Votive stelae in Carthage used to be carved with the words : “[We] the people of Carthage”.
Eventually, they would also call themselves “chanani” (canaanites) after the fall of Carthage according to Augustine.

Philology : Correctly pronouncing “Elissa” Canaanite-Carthaginian-Phoenician equivalent for Dido.
-Carthaginian (Lexilogo’s Phoenician keyboard) : 𐤏𐤋𐤑𐤕
-Arabic (transliterated from Carthaginian) : علشة
-Tunisian (Modern) 🇹🇳 : عليسة
-Lebanese (Modern) 🇱🇧 : إليسا
@meladahmed15 @lds19az @FidanzataLa @BanuZiri It is only in 1934 that Italy adopted the name "Libya" as the official name of their colony. Hannibal was Carthaginian and saying he is Libyan (modern meaning of Libyan) is like saying a Tunisian whose family name is “Trabelsi” is Libyan, absolute nonsense.
