I have literally met half a dozen SonTails fans who are part of the LGBTQ+ community who grew up knowing they were gay, and you know what? One of the first things they started shipping was Sonic and Tails, or any Sonic characters for that matter.

And that's natural, because what one person sees, another does not. That is fantasy. Fantasy lives in the realm of "what if" and endless possibilities, of being creative.

And you know, the argument that "I hate that this is being made gay" doesn't really hold up. One of the first gay ships existed well before the age of the internet. Ever heard of Spirk, the slash ship between James T. Kirk and Spock?

The first fanfiction and fan art for that was being made in the 1970s and early 1980s by many LGBTQ+ people who often had to remain hidden.

RE: "Tails is 8", an essay.

None of these characters have ages anymore since ages were removed in 2022.

An 8 year old fox would be an adult and a 15 year old hedgehog would be elderly and exceptionally long-lived. Cream was '6 years old' and could drive a car. Amy was 8 until she wasn't (Adventure) and Shadow is either 2-4 years old or 52-54 years old, yet the fandom treats him as equivalent to Sonic.

The aging of Sonic anthropomorphic animal species has always been something dubious and the modern fandom's attitude to treat the ages as equivalent to literal human ages is not something that was always prevalent or dominant.within the fandom. These ages have always been interpreted differently.

Personally, given that '8 year olds' in Sonic's world could own property, drive cars, and own businesses, I never really saw an '8 year old' mobian or anthropomorphic animal person to be a minor in my interpretation of the series when I was younger and the ages existed.

But now the ages don't exist so I don't really care about this point.

I think it is heavily reductive to treat fictional furry species as if they must follow human maturity standards or aging conventions. This would be like treating every robot or AI character like their literal age in human years. By this logic, Sage would be 0 years old in Frontiers. Do you not see the issue here?

Furry media has historically always played around with the idea of furry characters maturing at faster rates than humans. See twokinds and the Keidran. Sonic is a scifi series at heart with elements of fantasy and cyberpunk across its vast history. All of these genres play with alternative maturity to human ages.

These characters are timeless fantasy icons that have existed for decades. Trying to ascribe a precise age label to all depictions and to limit creativity of others is not productive. Depict them as whatever ages you wish in your fan content if it helps the story that you are trying to tell, but there is no reason to play the 'X character is Y age' game when such rules are hypocritically applied and ignore contrary evidence to suggest an incredibly biased picture that presumes a truism (funny animal ages are equivalent of human ages) which the games themselves never express.
