There's not much that would get me to Manchester on a night, but I couldn't miss the first night of Something Rotten at the Opera House. Absolutely loved it. Smiled and laughed from start to finish. Loved it on Broadway and will have to go back again.

He was one of my favourite horses in training. Was looking forward to what he would achieve this year.

Any life lost too soon is tragic and unjust and is almost certainly always difficult to accept. Hearing that The Lion in Winter has passed away is a terribly painful one. He was such a talented horse, a really unlucky one too, who never seemed to get the rub of the green health wise or on the track, and was perhaps viewed as a horse who never totally realised his full potential, despite achieving an official mark of 117.

I spoke with David Hickey at Ascot on Champions Day after The Lion in Winter had finished second in the QEII and in a few words he expressed such love and affection for this horse. He told me how special he was to him. I will remember the sincerity of his eye contact when he was talking about him so fondly. It was so touching.

I hope he didn’t suffer. I hope he enjoyed his short time on this earth and I hope that wherever he goes next he will achieve, stand proud, and say “I told you so.”
