Most people know how to move a car, but very few know how to take care of one during a long trip. Save this before your next safari.
When you start the vehicle, don’t immediately rev the engine and leave as though someone is chasing you. Give it a few seconds for the engine to settle, confirm that the warning lights have gone off, then begin driving gently. Modern cars don’t require ten minutes of idling; the best warm-up is driving moderately while avoiding hard acceleration and high revs until the engine reaches normal operating temperature.
Before travelling long distance, check the engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, tyre pressure, tyre condition, lights, wipers and fuel. Confirm that the spare wheel has pressure, because carrying a flat spare tyre from Nairobi to Namanga is just travelling with emotional support. Also make sure the jack and wheel spanner are actually in the vehicle, not safely stored in someone’s garage back home.
At highway speeds, keep a safe distance and avoid resting your foot on the brake pedal. Even light, continuous pressure creates heat and can wear the brake pads or reduce braking effectiveness. When descending places like Limuru, Mai Mahiu or the escarpment, select a lower gear and allow the engine to help control the speed instead of riding the brakes mpaka zinanuka kama chuma imechomeka.
When a warning light appears, don’t cover it with your phone holder and continue praying. A red warning light normally means you should pull over safely and investigate immediately, especially if it involves oil pressure, overheating or the braking system. An amber light may allow cautious driving, but you should still check the owner’s manual or contact a mechanic because dashboard lights are communication, not decoration.
In case of a puncture or tyre blowout, hold the steering wheel firmly, remain calm and avoid slamming the brakes. Ease off the accelerator gradually, allow the vehicle to slow down, switch on the hazards and pull completely away from traffic before stopping. Please don’t start changing a tyre while half of the car is still on Thika Road; a rim can be replaced, but you cannot.
After a long, demanding drive, especially at sustained highway speeds, up steep hills or in a turbocharged vehicle, don’t arrive and immediately switch off after driving it like a rally car. Drive gently for the final few minutes and, where the manufacturer recommends it, allow the engine to idle briefly before switching off so temperatures can stabilise. This is not an excuse to leave the car idling for twenty minutes while discussing land with your uncles.
Lastly, take breaks, drink water and never fight sleep behind the wheel. Opening the window, increasing the music and chewing gum cannot negotiate with fatigue. Park somewhere safe and rest.
A good driver doesn’t only know how to accelerate; they know how to listen to the vehicle, protect the passengers and arrive safely.
Which important long-distance driving rule did I leave out?
Once I realized I can import products on AliExpress cheaply, I have never looked back. I bought cycling gloves in Eldoret at Ksh. 1200, exactly the same cycling gloves on AliExpress costed KSh. 400.
Similar to protective glasses that I bought at 1400 in Eldoret while the same costed 500 on AliExpress.
Get your products from AliExpress. It saves you money.
