The baseline 10% tariffs take effect April 5
The higher reciprocal rates will take effect April 9
Trump is declaring a national economic emergency over trade deficits, which gives him the legal authority to regulate imports
🚨 Trump’s long-awaited reciprocal tariff plan:
- 10% baseline tariff on imports from ALL countries
- Higher tariffs for ~60 “worst offender” nations (awaiting details on those)
- Canada, Mexico still face 25% fentanyl tariffs; USMCA-compliant exemptions remain in place
The new US tariffs on Canada (the only executive order published so far) go into effect at 12:01 am Eastern time on Tuesday, unless the goods got there before 12:01 am this morning, as I read this.
Per a copy of the executive order on Canadian tariffs sent out by the White House, they are suspending the de minimis exception for imports from that country. Which means any purchase of goods from Canada, at any value, will face a 25% tariff (or 10% if energy).
US, Mexico and the food supply chain. Most Americans are unaware that the U.S. imports $45.4 billion in ag goods from Mexico. Given that most U.S. households are still reeling from the 2021 price shock an increase in food prices is not going to be well received by households. That means they will pull back on outlays of other goods and services as food prices resume rising if the trade tiff is sustained.
Politico covered the CEA's new report on Trump's tariffs and pointed to @TaxFoundation's new analysis on his tax and tariff plans too (“criticism from economists’ across the political spectrum”).
We find a new trade war could fully wipe out the gains from tax reform.
@dieworkwear Trunk Club opened a bespoke shopping location in Washington DC with an open bar targeting mostly male shoppers. Frankly, it made shopping fun for many people that don’t like to shop for clothes but like to look somewhat stylish (me). It closed in Covid, but it was a good idea.
It looks like the container ship that hit the bridge in Baltimore was carrying hides that are now washing up in the harbor. Unreal. I don’t know of many US companies that use Baltimore as a primary port but it is certainly possible.
