"After more than 12 years in office, Prime Minister Narendra Modi faces a painful reality check: His promise to modernize India’s economy hasn’t panned out. Instead, the country faces a rapidly weakening rupee, dwindling net foreign investment, and worries that artificial intelligence will take a wrecking ball to the information technology industry," writes CFR expert @dhume for @WSJ.

“एक राजा था। उसके चाटुकारों ने उसको कह दिया था कि वह महान है। एक दिन किसी ने उसको आईना दिखा दिया। इसके बाद राजा ने ऐलान कर दिया, “जो आईना दिखाए वह दुश्मन है। जो सवाल पूछे है वो ग़द्दार है।
ऐसा ही एक राजा हमारे देश में भी है”
To the aspiring Mayor of Kolkata (at least according to your supporters), Shri Sajal Ghosh (@sajalghoshofc),
⛳️During your campaign in Baranagar, you repeatedly asked residents to give the BJP, and you personally, one opportunity to bring change. You were visible in every lane and neighbourhood, day and night, seeking public support and promising transformation.
⚠️Yet, ever since you won the election, your presence in the constituency has become remarkably difficult to find. I regularly see and hear you on television delivering catchy, populist soundbites, but I hardly see you engaging with the very people who elected you. What changed after the votes were counted?
📴More concerning is the fact that the phone number publicly shared by you appears largely unresponsive. Calls go unanswered, and attempts to reach your office often yield no response. Where is the accessibility and public engagement that voters were promised?
➡️Baranagar deserves a representative who lives among the people, remains accessible, and is committed to address local concerns, not another politician who campaigns on promises only to become distant after victory. Residents have already experienced this with Shri Tapas Roy during his tenure in the TMC. They should not have to experience the same disappointment again.
The constituency continues to struggle with
❌poor civic administration,
❌municipal inefficiency,
❌corruption, and
❌political high-handedness.
👉🏻If the elected MLA remains detached from the ground reality, who will take responsibility for addressing these issues? Effective representation requires regular engagement with every locality, understanding local challenges firsthand, and working towards practical and tailored short-term and long-term solutions.
🏛️🔷The truth is that many voters supported the BJP out of hope—for stronger governance and the promise of a “Double Engine” government. It certainly wasn’t because of the party’s organisational strength in the area. In fact, BJP workers failed to even provide voter slips in many places, a basic electoral service that the CPI(M) has consistently managed in every election despite its sharp decline. In several booths, there were not even BJP booth-level agents. So, did organisational efficiency deliver this victory? The answer is clearly no.
🚨Now, after the first significant spell of rain, large parts of Baranagar were once again waterlogged. Areas near Baranagar Police Station and Jogendra Basak Road were submerged under knee-deep water.
❓Jogendra Basak Road is the only major access road for several adjoining localities. When it goes under water, entire neighbourhoods are cut off.
❓How will an ambulance reach a patient? How will residents access emergency services? What happens if there is a fire or a medical emergency?
👉🏻Nobody expects decades-old civic problems to be solved within a month.
❓❔⁉️But has the MLA visited these affected areas? Has he assessed where the drainage system is failing, how immediate relief can be provided, and what long-term measures are required?
✅This could have been a real-life situation for a new MLA to assess upon assuming office..
👉🏻Instead, you seem more occupied with sitting at the KMC headquarters, mocking Firhad Hakim, and informally campaigning for the upcoming KMC elections.
Baranagar elected an MLA, not a television commentator. Isn’t it?
Disappointing so far!
