I saw a reel about the callings and prescriptions given to men as husbands in the Bible and I started scrolling through the comments.

So there is a common gap of understanding that I always see in posts like this, and I see it from men and women.

“Well men would be more old fashioned IF she ______.”

“Well I would be submissive IF he _______.”

The shortcomings and failings of another person are not a valid excuse for you to shirk your responsibility of obedience to God’s law. When I tell my oldest daughter that she shouldn’t hit her little sister when she’s upset, there is no ground for her to say “Well I would if she didn’t make me upset.” Wrong kid. YOU are held to a standard of behavior and action, regardless of what your little sister is doing. She’s not as old as you, she doesn’t know all that you know, so you have to set the example and align yourself with the rules of our home. Your obedience and alignment sets a tone for for her to see and follow. When she wrongs you, bring it to me and I will address it.

When you begin to align yourself with the rules and values given to us for our benefit and you leave the rest to your Heavenly Father, he will move them. I believe He will either touch and change their heart and open their eyes to see what you are doing in His honor, or he will remove them because of their failure to uphold their end of the covenant. There is Biblical precedent for divorce, but like any relationship you have to start with “Am I doing all that I can to uphold my end of this arrangement? Have I taken ownership of all my own shortcomings? Have I given the rest to God to take and cover what I cannot?”

The sins and failings of others are not excuses for us to violate and break what we know to be right.

The tit for tat trade is not the spirit of love that we are called to carry. Often it just leads to a transactional perspective of a relationship that leads to continual downward spiral.

The man should lead/serve his home through his actions and behaviors. But sometimes the woman will subtly and passively lead just by her obedience to what God calls her to do.

My own marriage has been saved more than once by my wife’s unwavering will and dedication to what is right and true. Sometimes it just took me longer to catch up and I’m grateful for the grace given to me by her and the Lord to arrive.

Two days ago a tornado ripped by our house about 1000 feet away. It destroyed our porch, part of our fence and took half of our neighbor’s barn away. It lifted their garage and dropped it. The Amish across the road lost a chicken house and a barn.

19 tornados touched down in 25 counties in Missouri and claimed 12 lives. The wife and I will be sitting down to talk about our experience during all of this. It will be released as a podcast episode soon.
