Mountains of Vietnam.

A Marine corporal named Roy Hammonds left a position of safety and threw himself between a sniper and a wounded second lieutenant.

Bullets that were meant for that young officer tore into him instead.

That second lieutenant was still able to drag him to cover. He held him. Tried to save him. Watched him die in his arms.

Then he helped carry Roy’s body up that mountain with a hole in his own back.

On the last medevac out, he held Roy’s hand the entire way so he wouldn’t be alone.

He didn’t even know him.

That is the measure of a man.

That is the price paid so the rest of us can live free.

Today we honor every Purple Heart recipient and every brother who never made it home.
