What a terrible loss for Portland and for journalism. I don't know of anyone who loved the city more than Zane. He put himself in harm’s way and told hard truths. He documented realities that undermined a world’s worth of Portland mythmaking.

Take a look at this! Jeff Lipple and Capt. Greg Lipple of Island Charters rescued a deer that had fallen through the ice in Cedarville Bay of the Les Cheneaux Islands.
“We meticulously checked the ice on the way in and out, we were wearing ice gear that floats, had ice picks, a ladder, rope, jet sleds and somebody watching and assisting from shore. Always have an emergency plan and never go alone without letting someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back.”
NOTE: Going out onto thin and dangerous ice is not recommended.
