@jasonomahony Every single TD in the Dail was elected with only a plurality of the vote. If you could turf them out with a simple majority that would lead to chaos.
@RummHammm Richard O'Donoghue had an adverse finding about his expenses released a few weeks before the election and he ended up getting 10.5k first preference votes.
@Captain88428953 @PamphletsY Some people's ideology simply boils down to "I am for anyone who the USA is against". Not too nuanced but perfect for simpletons.
@EmmaJaneDempsey@Flyerraven Yes he is a TD. The Ceann Comhairle will be elected as the first act of the new Dail from the assembled TDs.
He wants to do it again but his party may not want him to do so as numbers are tight and they might need his vote.
@BawsmanJJ @BladeoftheS The status quo means that the majority of people live in "safe" constituencies where their vote is essentially meaningless. In those that are competitive people often have to resort to voting against someone rather than for someone. None of that is good for democracy.
@AngusStoneham_@LibDems@sarahjolney1 Yes - one held at a time when the electorate were still furious about austerity. One that was so simplistic in wording that nobody could agree what it meant in multiple areas. One with disastrous consequences that are still being felt to this day.
@AngusStoneham_@LibDems@sarahjolney1 "Something happened". Yes Brexit. Something that would never have happened under a coalition government because no other party leader would have been stupid enough to agree to such a ridiculous gamble on something so important.
@AngusStoneham_@LibDems@sarahjolney1 Your first point is ridiculous. Since 2016 there was been huge instability.
Your final point is inaccurate as well. What you are describing only happens with a list system. That is not necessary. In Ireland the voters elect local candidates just like in the UK. They use PR-STV.
