cigarette perched between my fingers, I let my head hang back against the seat to stare up at the ceiling. "Transformed... like a butterfly. Bleeding for a dream that was never mine."
As the drinks returned, I moved myself to settle across from him at the table while fixing myself a smoke. "That speaks a lot to your honor, Mr. Shelby. I don't recognize myself anymore either. Casualty of the Great War I'm afraid."
Taking in a slow drag from the hand rolled
I didn't need long to think of my answer. In many ways this "climb" made me a stranger to myself. But... it didn't *start* with the climb. In fact, it started in that damned tunnel...
One thing it wouldn't take from me, however, was my family. They were still what was important
I pause for a moment, with my gaze softening as I considered his words. Then, with a measured tone that carried both understanding and a trace of challenge, I turned back to him with my head tipping slightly to the side.
"Family is a powerful reason, Mr. Shelby. But
I had my hand on the glass, just absentmindedly tracing the rim with my middle finger before she took it away. My hand lowered to rest against the table in a half curled fist, my gaze turning to follow her movements.
Was it worth it? Of course. It was for the family.
"It's

Pulling away from him she was taking his glass and setting it on the tray of a retreating server. "Another round for Mr. Shelby, S'il te plaรฎt..."

"Broken things can still be beautiful, Mr. Shelby." I answered without hesitation. "But donโt mistake your sharp edges for a lack of worth. A gentleman is more than mannersโitโs the fight to rise above the ruin."

@KingpinShelby piercing, searching. โYouโre brave,โ he said. โOr reckless.โ
โMaybe both,โ I replied, meeting his gaze. โAnd youโre trouble. I hope you didn't bring trouble to my doorstep, Mr. Shelby...โ
@KingpinShelby smoothly. He glanced at Thomas. โAnother time.โ
He turned and walked away, his men trailing behind him. The tension didnโt leave the room until the doors closed behind them. This wasn't over. It was just a detour to what Changretta had wanted.
